Fitness Friday

Did you know that exercise can reduce stress? Okay, I am sure we all HEAR that, but how many of us actually follow that advice? This is a subject that hits close to home with me, and I often find myself slacking on the exercise when I am stressed the most! And I KNOW I would feel better if I just got moving!

How does exercise lessen stress and anxiety?

*It pumps up your endorphins. Physical activity helps to bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Although this function is often referred to as a runner’s high, a rousing game of tennis or a nature hike also can contribute to this same feeling.

*It’s meditation in movement. While doing laps in the pool or shredding away, you’ll often find that you’ve forgotten the day’s dilemmas and irritations and concentrated only on your body’s movements. As you begin to regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, you may find that this focus on a single task, and the resulting energy and optimism, can help you remain calm and clear in everything that you do.

*It improves your mood. Regular exercise can increase self-confidence and lower the symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety. This can ease your stress levels and give you a sense of command over your body and your life.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Find an activity that you enjoy, and when life’s stresses are beginning to get you down, get your move on!

although i still maintain that the “exercise helps pms” suggestion is complete crap (hello! did anyone read my blog on Wednesday – Holy PMS Batman!) My body has actually started enjoying exercise.

I wanted to take a mental health day wednesday and couldn't. but i didn't want to on thursday because i didn't want to miss my total body weights class :)

finding something you like really is the key.

I agree that exercise definitely helps with stress and mood. I've never felt better since starting the 30-Day Shred.

I have found that I feel so much better after I exercise. Last night I was really tired, but knew I needed to shred. I did it, and afterwards had all kinds of energy to finish dishes and do laundry! I love it! (although it was my first attempt at phase 2- it wasn't that bad!)

I just finished day 1 (for me) of the Shred…..Oh. Wow.

  • shrinkingjeans

Yay! What did you think? You will be really sore in like two days. ;o)

I feel so much better after I exercise too. It is just that point beforehand… if I am in a crappy mood I tend to make everything else crappy too.

I have been exercising regurally for the past 1 1/2 years. No, I haven't shed all the weight I want to shed…STILL, but I have reaped all of the benefits that you just described. Sometimes, I think about how I felt, my attitude, etc. BEFORE and how I feel NOW & it is like I am a different person. Now if I could just convince my husband of this and get him moving!

Thanks for the great article, it is so true!

Exercise totally improves mood. I'm on day 4 of not being able to exercise, and it's driving me nuts! I'm cranky and I may just go insane if I can't exercise soon!

That said, I will do as I'm told.
