Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes…

“A bend in the road is not the end of the road, unless you fail to make the turn.”

O.K.  So we’ve probably all been there at one time or another in our lives…you are doing everything right. You’re eating the right foods, drinking your water, exercising, but it seems like no matter what we do, the scale just doesn’t want to budge. Or, you are fighting with the same 3-5 pounds every week that just won’t seem to GO AWAY (or stay away)!

Some call it a plateau. I call it a rut.

I am currently in a rut. I eat the same things every day. I do the same program on the treadmill (on the rare occasion I actually turn it on…LOL!). And while those things might be comfortable because they are habit, they do nothing for my desire for something, anything, different. I am bored with oatmeal and yogurt for breakfast. I’m bored with carrot sticks. I’m bored with my treadmill routine. I’m bored overall.

And let me tell you, boredom can be the death of a healthy lifestyle. Nothing tempts me to overeat or indulge too much like boredom. Honestly, if I let myself have a little peanut butter everyday, I might not have been so tempted by the jar and large spoon I sat down with today…

Consistent weight loss (or weight management once you’ve hit your goal) is so much easier if you change things up every once in a while. Sometimes your body (or attitude) just needs a set of jumper cables to get things moving again. The change doesn’t have to be big, even the smallest of things can get the scale going in the right direction.

Tired of plain water? Try the new flavored waters available or freeze some berries in ice cubes and add that to your cup.

Do you skip breakfast? Try eating something small in the morning before you have your morning coffee.

Do you eat the same breakfast everyday? Break out the cookbook and try something new.

Are you tired of the way you prepare veggies? Give tired, ol’ steam veggies a kick in the pants with some new spices.

Would you rather eat dirt than get on the treadmill one more time? Try a tape at home or sign up for a new class at the gym.

Does the thought of writing your food down put you to sleep? Ditch the spiral-bound notebook and get a fancy or inspirational journal that inspires you to treat your body with the same respect that you treat the journal.

Are you bored with something in your routine? Tell us about it and let us know what you are going to do this week to change it!

i'm so sick of constantly thinking about what i put in my mouth (or want to put in my mouth)! That's the rut i'm in….it really is important to treat yourself. i try to buy a different variety of the same foods each week. different flavored Boca patties, different 100 calorie snack packs, different brands of microwave meals, etc etc.

Um, yeah. That's me. I am so burned out on eating right, that I freaking went insane last night. I'm not going to even list the food I ate at an Italian restaurant, but trust me when I tell you it was the worst. But DAMN it was GOOD. So freakin' good. Know what else? I'm right back on track today. I think it was just what I needed :)

    Great post, Thea!!!

Wow! So that may explain some things about Team Blue's success this week…huh? Anyway the way I have been fighting the boredom this time around (and hope to continue to do so as I lose the rest of my 60 pounds) is changing my exercise routine around. I absolutely hate to exercise so I've been changing it around ALOT!! I did Jillian, now I'm doing a 10 minutes solution series and I change every other night. That's really helped! Food is kind of a weakness in the routine section…I'm a picky eater, so it's hard to find foods that are different that I like, but I'm still searching that out!! I've heard that as you get closer to your goal weight you really have to boost your metabolism by adding extra exercise or changing the foods around and eating different quantities…I don't know if that's true or not…I'm along way from my goal weight!!

I was getting bored at the gym, so this week I've been trying one new thing each time I go. I discovered that I like the rowing machine and I found a better thingy for my upper arm workout. Today I think I'll venture onto one of the stair climbers and give that a shot.

Routine is the enemy!! I have found the same thing, any kind of routine my body quickly adapts too and then I stop making progress. I've added things like swimming, I've added more weights, I've changed machines, sometimes I do free weights instead of machines, CROSSFIT! Visit crossfit.com, it is an amazing workout dedicated to shocking your body with different daily workouts. the army uses it but even grandmas can do it. It's all about changing, thank you for all those great suggestions! You're exactly right! Plus, not to mention the fact that routine is BORING!

As far as the food goes…have a few choices…Cut up viggies all at once…try different “dips” like hummus, or black bean, or plain yogurt and spices…

Excercises can be tough…go to the library and take one or two new ones…try something new for two weeks…then return it and grab another one…

I do the same thing myself…get focused one one particular path, then get frustrated…

Motivation, and having someone to partner with may help too…
