My *Baby* Completes his First 5K!

Well, maybe he isn’t exactly a BABY, but I will forever call the twins “my babies” and I think secretly they like it, despite the outwardly protests.

Before the Race

Awhile back, I wrote about participating in races to benefit charities. This past weekend, I signed up to do a 5K for Sherry’s Wishes, a local organization in honor of a woman whose life was taken by cancer. I drug my husband out of bed to do the race with me and that is when one of my 5-year-olds decided that he wanted to join us. The three of us signed up to do the 5K walk and off we went! Justin and my son didn’t take long to leave my Aunt and I in the dust. Once he saw those trophies on the sign-up table, Ash decided he was in this to WIN! Unfortunately, he petered out towards the end -those little legs were struggling to keep going! He kept on plugging away  and we let him “beat us” to the finish line.

Stacey, the organization co-founder, made sure to give recognition to Ashton as the youngest 5K finisher in her speech and presented him with a backpack. You should have seen his face glowing as we all clapped and cheered for him. He was SO PROUD of himself, and of course, I was struggling not to cry!

Post-Race

I am so excited that he is already taking his health seriously at such a young age and I am also glad to see that he has inherited his parents’ competitive spirits, something that our older two seem to be lacking. He is already looking forward to his next race and asking if he can do the 4th of July 5K with me!

Now to my point:  If my 5-year-old can finish those 3.1 miles, so can you! Sign up for that first race and make it your goal to finish! You can always work on improving your time once you have that first race under your belt!

He is just beaming after the race. This is so motivating…if a child can do it, then surely so can I! Kind of puts a new perspective on all the old and tired excuses I use to get out of my firsts 5K. Thanks for posting…and for doing such a wonderful job with some of the members of our next generation~
