Review: EA Sports Active Personal Trainer

[ 102 ] 08/07/2009 |

EA Sports Active**This giveaway has been closed!**

All of us at the Sisterhood have had the extreme pleasure of trying out the new EA Sports Active Personal Trainer for the Wii.

I have exercised with the EA Sports Active for the last two days and OMG- I am DYING.  But in a good way.  My muscles are sore beyond belief (I think I am more sore than when we did the 30 Day Shred), it hurts to go from sitting to standing, from laying down to standing, from standing to sitting, pretty much any movement causes me to wince.  Might I be out of shape?

To be honest, when I broke open that box I was like a little kid at Christmas, so excited to see what all the uproar was about.  Then I saw the “equipment” that comes with the game and I thought to myself- “You have got to be kidding me.  This must be a joke.  That red piece of plastic is supposed to give me resistance and provide me with a good, heart pumping, cardiovascular workout.  Yeah, right.”.

But I had already agreed to try it out and I was willing to see if the folks at EA Sports Active were able to pull off a miracle and make me sweat while “playing a game”.  Of course, what I forgot is that I break a sweat just putting the kids in their car seats.  What I forgot is that I sweat when I drink a cup of coffee.  What I forgot is that I sweat when bringing the groceries in from the car.   Yep, it didn’t take long for me to get sweating!

EA Sports Active Personal Trainer features:

  • a variety of preset workouts
  • custom workouts- limitless options to create a workout just for you
  • 30 Day challenge (did someone say CHALLENGE?!)
  • videos throughout to show you how to do each move
  • workout alone or together with a friend
  • fitness journal
  • projected caloric burn for each workout and actually calories burned

Here is what some of our SJ writers have to say about the EA Sports Active:

Christy: By the end of the 20-minute workout, I was soaked in sweat, and I really wasn’t expecting that from a workout labeled easy.  The think I love most about EA Sports Active Personal Trainer is the fact that it shows you your projected caloric burn and then the actual calories you’ve burned during the workout. Very sweet!

It’s been 24 hours since I did the workout and I have to say I have some pretty good muscle soreness. Mostly in my glutes, hamstrings, quads and hips, but also in my upper body. I’m really excited to start the 30-Day Challenge feature with all my girls at the Sisterhood (I wonder what Christy is talking about……), but until then, I’ll set up some custom workouts and hit it everyday!

p.s. My 5 year old son will not stop using it. He LOVES it so much, and has been able to figure everything out even though he can’t read yet. Obviously it’s very intuitive!

Thea: EAS is stinkin’ awesome.  The best part for me is that it’s fun.  I actually ENJOY working out when I’m using it. One of my favorite features is that you DON’T need the Wii Fit Board to use it.  I like that it’s something that Dave and I can do together (Us? Competitive? NEVER!) and even my 6-year-old, Jake, really enjoys using it.  It took a little while to get the timing down, but that’s really my only complaint!  Definitely worth the money!

April: I LOVE THIS GAME.  I love working out (okay, not really, but I love how working out makes me FEEL), and I love video games.  You combine the two and I am in heaven!!  One thing that really impressed me when Christy, Lisa, and I first tried this game out was that it projects the number of calories you may burn, and then at the end of the work out, the game shows you how many calories you actually burned.  Also, I REALLY love the sports section!  I am a WNBA superstar on the basketball exercises, but I suck ass at the volleyball ones. By the end of the 20 minutes, I was sweaty and stinky, and I loved it. And just so we’re clear, I love this game!

Me: I have only done two of the MANY workouts and what I really appreciate about this game is the variety.  It’s fast-paced, the exercises change frequently, at any given time you know how long you have worked out, how many calories you hav burned, and what rep you are on.  I love the mixing up of strength training with cardio exercise.  I love that I can choose to do a 20, 30, or 40 minute workout or mix it up if I like.  The options are limitless!  I am looking forward to doing the 30 Day Challenge with the Sisterhood (this again?!).

Brace yourself…….exciting news to announce.

The fine people at EA Sports Active have given us the opportunity to………*drumroll please*

I am definitely ready for this challenge! I'm trying to lose the last 10-20 lbs, but am struggling through yet another plateau. And I admit – I'm getting bored with the gym… I need to mix it up a bit and have some fun! And at my home in So. Florida, it would be great to have a way to workout indoors.

It would also be nice to have an excuse to use my Wii again. I would be excited to do this challenge with you all!

P.S. I also just subscribed to your feed on my Google Reader.

Oh man, being this early means I won't win (low numbers NEVER come up on contests!) but I'm excited at the chance anyway! I've been wanting to try this for SO LONG. Longingly watching the other bloggers try it out, biding my time for my chance since I can't buy it myself. I LOVE that you guys are expecting the winner to be a part of the challenge too. LOVE. IT. Good luck to everyone!

P.S. Just subscribed, totally thought I already was!

I would love to do this because I am growing weary of my current workouts and need some new motivation. :)

I am more than ready for this challenge. I love the idea of the product and its ability to keep us all moving and shaking but still in our homes where we can be active with our children. I also like the idea of these different fitness 'games' because my kids like to do them with me…. I myself may not be the healthiest person in the world (hey I'm working on it) but I know that I am at least giving my children the right skills to be healthy and fit adults…

Thanks for this awesome oppertunity ladies :)

  • jaimelynne

    I am past being ready!
I just had my second baby boy ( and by just, i mean a year ago.. haha ) and i'm left with the mommy pouch that i did not have with my 1st! I keep bugging my husband to buy it for me, but it just isn't working, and i cant justify spending that money on myself when there's stuff for the boys i could buy.

  • http://bacardimama.blogspot.com/ Nancy

First, I already have the EA Sports Active. I think I bought it back during the Biggest Loser Challenge. You guys will inspire me to get back to it. If I won it, it would be a fantastic Christmas present for my nieces. They love to use it when they come here. That piece of red plastic…watch out. The handle snapped off mine and that piece of red plastic would have liked to kill me. I subscribe to the feed. I'm out of here and off to kick some Active butt. Thanks for the chance to win.

Ok. I'm up for the challenge. The shred was awesome. I've heard good things about this program, but I haven't been able to convince myself to fork over the money yet.

Awesome! I just tweeted about this (@lkpankratz) and I am a subscriber.

Okay so why am I ready for this challenge with EA Active? I've been looking at it in store and online (before it was even released) and I know it will give me a great workout. I am curious about all the different exercise options and like the fact that you customize a workout, keep a journal, and do a challenge. How awesome is that? I really like how Nintendo is making the Wii a complete family gaming console and not something just for the gamers.

I'm hoping that by adding the EA Active workout to my routine that it will break me out of my rut!

  • clutterbox

I am sooo happy to hear a review about EA Sports!! I have been debating on buying it!! Now I wanna go get it now!!!
Giveaways are the BEST! I am a subscriber but I don't tweet… I am ready for a challenge!!

  • Sarah_MommyElephant

I'm not entering to win this because I already own it, and wanted to say I love it as well. I actually did the 30 day challenge during our 7 week challenge here!! I think it's so fun, and I like how everyday you do something different!! And really it's only 20 days of working out because you get 2 days off each week. I was so into it, I got my mom to buy one too. Good luck to all of you!!

  • Christy_TheSisterhood

Thanks for your input Sarah! I LOVE it so much, too!

  • lizlovingmom

I am definitely ready for this challenge. My biggest problem right now isn't so much my actual weight (go Team Sage!!) but the fact that I can't seem to get motivated to exercise anymore. I used to be so active (yoga, running, weekly volleyball) now other than chase my kids…nothing. I do have the wii fit, but seem to have reached my limits with that and would really like to try something new….and be motivated by this wonderful group to boot!!!

  • lizlovingmom

I have this an love it too…I get all sweaty….and that's fun. I like the fact that I can see what they have set up for me…there is one particular excercise I can NOT do, it hurts my leg…so I cut it out, and do the rest…What fun.

The only problem I have had is that you can't get out if you need to quit early. I got a late start the other day, and decided something was better than nothing. Unfortunatly, when I tried to end it, there was no option (that I found) and I got no credit for what I did….Boo Hoo…

Thants ok, I still look forward to working out with this program…I'm on my second 30 day challenge.

I'm so ready for another Sisterhood challenge! I've been slacking on my workouts, and it's starting to show! I really need a kick in the butt! I've been wanting EA Sports Active since it came out, but I figured I'd just wait for my b-day in October. Now I either need to win, or buy one, because I'm not missing this next challenge!

Now I'm stuck at those last 20 lbs that I just am dying to lose and nothing better like a new routine to try and bust through the pounds. The 30-day shred did wonders for me (and I'm still doing it a few days a week), so I am totally ready to jump into another challenge.

i am so ready for this challenge! i have carried around an extra 20 pounds for the last few years, and as i get older, it seems like those pounds are packing on a little bit easier. i've been looking at the EA wii active program in the past couple of weeks, and even though i liked wii fit, i've really been interested in the reviews and results i've heard about the wii active. i'm looking for something that i can do in my house, that's quick and effective, and a NO EXCUSES workout!
i also like the idea of participating in a sisterhood challenge–holding each other accountable to doing the workout every day and sharing the experience with others. so excited about this giveaway!

Just subscribed to your feed via Yahoo. I follow a lot of you on Twitter and everyone seems to be so supportive and committed. Between working full time and trying to spend time with my family, I don't have the time to get to the gym. I want to be the healthiest mom I can be for my son, so when I start this challenge, I'm also giving up cigarettes. I've done the Wii Fit (boring), I've got the My Fitness Coach (boring), so I need a reason to turn my Wii back on. Looking forward to buying skinny jeans with you ladies!

I don't want to cringe and hide away every time someone takes a picture on that day. And the 30 day challenge is JUST what I need to help me get in the habit, have fun and support while doing it! just dropped by to say that i love the ea active. unfortunately, i cannot use it now until after physical therapy. my left knee is messed up. not allowed to jump, squat, or excessive use of stairs for a bit. :-/ but it really does work you out and you burn quite a bit in a short amount of time if you only do it 15 or 20 mins

I have been trying to loose 25 pounds. This would be great motivation. I get most of my exersise by walking and this would increase the variety. It would also be really useful once winter sets in as it is really tough to get out and walk in the winter here in the mountains.
