Suggestions, please!

[ 47 ] 08/20/2009 |

So, I’m training for this 5k.

Again.

I already completed one earlier this summer, but I wasn’t very satisfied with my time.  So I decided to sign up for another one.

This weight loss/exercise thing is so hard (whine).

Anyway, I’m training for a 5k on September 12th and I have found myself in a very, VERY dire situation.

I need new music for my iPod.

I’ve had the same music on there for a long time…everything from The Lion King soundtrack to KC and the Sunshine Band.

I love me some KC and the Sunshine Band.

But I’m tired of runing to the same old stuff. I need some serious motivation to get me across that finish line!

What do you listen to while you work out? Do you go for tempo, genre, motivational message?  What gets you moving??

Please help. I’m not sure I can cross another finish line to the music from Hairspray…

I've probably said this a few times, but I love music that get me going and “pumps me up”.

Songs and artists that help me get through:

    Eminem
    Seether
“Islands in the Stream” – Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers -SHUT UP
    “Hung Up” – Madonna
“Please Don't Stop the Music” – Rihanna
“Can't Get You Out of My Head” – Kylie Minogue

A New Fave – “Paranoid Freak” – The Trews
    Theory of a Deadman
    LOVE any Jack Johnson

    Hope this helps a little!

oooh ooh! pick me pick me! i am a itunes-playlist-a-holic! (i am so bummed you cannot use your ipod during the run portion of the triathlon, i could REALLY USE IT ABOUT THEN when I am ABOUT TO DIE.)
there are a couple songs that have been to die.for. that really keep me pumped and my feet moving and they are:

-Untouched by The Veronicas (has nothing to do with running, actually don't listen to the words at all, just move your feet with the beat.)
-I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
-Jai Ho from SlumDog Millionaire (love this!)
-Misery Business by Paramore (has gotten me fired up in the middle of a run more times than I can count).
-Paper Planes by MIA and make sure that you fire off fake guns with your fingers while you run and you hear the gun noises in the song, it makes running so much funner
    -Poker Face by Lady GaGa
-Stronger by Kanye West (self explanitory)
    -Don't Trust Me by 3Oh!3

of course the classics, “Taking Chances” by Celine Dion and “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall, those really were great motivators!

Oh yes, I do have more!!!! But those are some. Hope they help!!!

I'm no runner, as I think I've proven! But I love to workout to early 80s feel good music. It reminds me of being young and full of energy!! Some favorites:

    Come on, Eileen
    One Way or Another
    Dancing with Myself
    Vacation
    Micky
    Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
    Mad About You

I might be really dating myself by listing these!

  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans

I have to “run” to my dentist appointment so this will be quick…..

    Sexybaxk by Justin Timberlake
    All the Single Ladies- Beyonce
    Better Way- Ben Harper
    Hollaback Girl- Gwen Stefani

I like music that makes me want to move, move, move when exercising, although that Ben Harper song is a little slower, it is PURE AWESOME-NESS. There are more but those popped right off the top of my head.

  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans

That would be Sexyback by Justin Timberlake
Boom Boom Pow by the Black-Eyed Peas.

    BYE!!!!!

  • Christy_TheSisterhood

Ahh, I love me some KC and the Sunshine Band, too!!

I don't own an iPod *gasp*, so I don't have a playlist, but I do love me some Run DMC and Beastie Boys! Great beats for jumping rope, so I'm sure they'd do for running too! Plus you could wear your grillz and look really cool!

  • christieo

(really? no ipod? i would die. literally. how do you do it? nevermind. i can't even think about it. i can't go to that place, i might “secret” it in.)

  • kay6672

And here I was feeling all gauche and behind the times because I don't have a Wii!

(not that you should feel gauche or behind the times, just… nevermind…)

I have to confess that I like a lot of different music genres, so I have a variety from classical to 80's and beyond. But most often I listen to podcasts. I know I'm weird. I have a really steady pace though, maybe from being in music my whole life?

  • http://thesassymama.blogspot.com Heather

I love eighties, so it'd probably have to be something from that era. Though I don't listen to my ipod when I run because I'd probably get hit by a car…
When I used to work out at a gym, I'd always have some Justin Timberlake (love that JT!), Pet Benetar, Def Leppard, to name a few.
    Oh, HELLO.
I almost forgot Madonna. The Immaculate Collection is perfect workout music.
We should create a Sisterhood playlist to download…can we do that? That would be AWESOME!

  • http://thesassymama.blogspot.com Heather

OMG. PAT Benetar, not Pet. Nice!

  • christieo

yes, i thought about that! a sisterhood playlist! we should we should we should!

  • http://www.whooosthatgirl.com Lissa_ShrinkingJeans

OMG, no iPod? How can you LIVE????

  • http://darljo.blogspot.com/ darl_jo

i'm embarassed to admit that i don't have one either. And it's not lack of REALLY wanting one… I'm just having a hard time working it into the budget to get one. Can i blame not having one on not working out?

*You think you're a man – queer than folk
great beat and i love it when i'm especially mad at man LOL
*From paris to berlin – infernal
it's got a great beat to it
    *Bounce – Bon Jovi
*Please don't stop the music & Pon De Replay – Rhianna
    *Grace Kelly – Mika
    Great heavy background beat

  • http://www.youravon.com/mdickey Margie D.

I listen to the same music I love to dance to.

The Foo Foo song by Santana – actually ANYTHING by Santana
Crunchy Granola Suite – Neil Diamond – LOVE this one

I guess you can tell who is the old lady here!!

  • lucidb

I am a music fiend. These tunes are a few that get me moving. I used to be an online DJ and my music collection is insanely huge, so I am constantly switching out my playlists (and looking for new grooves)

*Parabol – Tool (it's about 3 minutes long and is slowish so it's a great warmup song, however it must immediately be followed by)
*Parabola – Tool (OMG this track has gotten me through so many physical/emotional rough spots and I love exercising to it)
*Breathe Me (Four Tet Remix) – Sia (this one is just plain funky, and takes me to another plane mood wise)
*Dare – The Gorillaz (super fun track….makes me break out into a poplock lol)
*Hot Ride – The Prodigy (Juliette Lewis sings on this track and boy has she got some energy)
*Hot Kiss – Juliette and the Licks (her again with her own band…amazing)
*Lovertits – Peaches (sometimes you just gotta be silly and Peaches is insane)
*Bikini Girls With Machine Guns – The Cramps (I have loved this band forever and this track makes me visualize myself in a bikini when I hit goal)

That's it for now, I could go on for pages.

This is gonna sound weird, and I've been meaning to do a post about this, but I run to classical. I have a 5K app on my iphone that lets me play my classical, but tells me when to run and walk. I set it in the baby jogger cup holder and listen with no headphones.

  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans

Christy doesn't exercise, that's how she can live without an Pod- Booyah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BrookeF

i listen to Christian music and its mostly about the beat, but also about the message. so “the voice of truth” keeps me pushing on even though i'm not the strongest, fastest, or best” also group one crew 'movin” is a good one.

  • http://wwwthelittlethingsinlife.blogspot.com/ Erin

In mid 90's a movie came out about boxing, called Gladiator. It had Cuba Gooding Jr in it, I recently found my cd and that is what I love to run to. Poison is good anything rock really gets me running .

  • http://wwwthelittlethingsinlife.blogspot.com/ Erin

i too set my iphone in the baby jogger and listen to it with no headphones. My son likes to listen to the music along with me.

  • BrookeF

go to your walmart – you'll be amazed at how cheap mp3 players are when you don't have to have the name brand. i'd rather have mine for $20, so if it get it sweat or drop it running i can just throw it away and not feel guilty about getting another one.

  • http://kcrules.wordpress.com/ Jennie

The Black Eyed Peas have some good stuff – Pump It! is one my most recent favs. I personally love hip-hop/dance or heavy metal. The faster and harder the tempo the better! How fast you move and how much you FEEL like moving really depends on that tempo. I also love Linkin Park. Most especially the song Bleed it Out. That clapping in the background totally makes me go! Good luck!

  • http://slimmerfancypants.blogspot.com/ Nancy Sabina

Yeah! I need some new tunes, too, so this is great for me. Right now I've got the soundtrack to the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic on my MP3 player. I especially like the songs “Unstoppable” and “Bluejeans” (that one always makes me think of Shrinking Jeans Sisters). I also love everything by Cake and Weezer for exercising. Oh – and you definitely have to have some Beyonce or Destiny's Child. They did a cover of Survivor that is pretty great.

  • Bari_F

I need some new tunes, too-so I'm going to be checking out your comments. Here are a few of the songs on my running playlist: Once in a Lifetime-Keith Urban (almost 6 min long and not too fast-gets you through your first 1/2 to 3/4 mile), All Summer Long-Kid Rock, Move Along-All American Rejects, This is How a Heart Breaks-Rob Thomas, Little Bit of Life-Craig Morgan, Crawling in the Dark-Hoobastank, I Ran (So Far Away)-Bowling for Soup, Born to Lead-Hoobastank (love the drill sargeant). Most of what I listen to has a pretty good beat. When I'm done, I like Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I know-weird.

  • Christy_TheSisterhood

I don't have an iPod because I never really needed one! The closest gym is 75 miles away and when I'm out walking, I'm with my family or kids, so I don't need to listen to anything! I'm actually asking for an iPod touch for my birthday in September, so I can download the C25K program and start that when it cools off a bit!

SO THERE, Hookers. All of you!

  • Christy_TheSisterhood

    Sure, thanks Karena ;) Meany.

  • Christy_TheSisterhood

I nominate you and Heather to do it!! I have no idea how. OBVIOUSLY. Since I don't OWN an iPod.

    Sheesh.

  • SJs_April

I know this may make me a bit weird, but when I'm working out, Metallica really keeps me going. I don't really care for it when I'm not working out though. Weird.

  • christieo

Haha is it bad that I want to block everyone out?? Hahaha

  • christieo

that's not weird, there's something to completely rocking out in a headbanging kind of way during a run or a workout. in spin class he plays some german metal stuff and it makes me feel all hardcore. hahaha

  • SJs_April

I just meant that it's weird that I only like it during work outs. Oh, and at Hokie games. ;)

  • brian_SJ

I echo everyone's sentiments about the Black Eyed Peas, Kayne West, Beastie Boys, Weezer and Gwen Stefani — I just try to stay away from songs that speed up and slow down.. that really screws me up. Another group I would like to add to the list is Led Zepplin. They have some amazing music that is great for works outs and some that are absolutely terrible. My fav Led's are:
Trampled Under Foot (really makes you want to stride out)
    Communication Breakdown
    Heartbreaker
    Whole Lotta Love
    Immigrant Song

Along those lines are The White Stripes and I have to admit I also listen to.. Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Fall Out Boy.

Led Zeppelin is one of my ALL-TIME favorite bands ever. Tangerine and Going to California. Not that those are good workout songs.

    And LOVE The White Stripes!

  • http://www.whooosthatgirl.com Lissa_ShrinkingJeans

I will have to check those out!!

  • http://www.whooosthatgirl.com Lissa_ShrinkingJeans

    Black Eyed Peas, for sure!

  • christieo

yeah, i know exactly! i would never actually listen to the german thrasher stuff either on my own. but it works for spin. i don't know. maybe it's the dark room, the burning thighs. wait, that sounds weird. nevermind. hahaha
