Keep it interesting

[ 8 ] 09/29/2009 |

We all know how easy it is to get into a rut, and how many different types of ruts there are. There are diet ruts, exercise ruts, bad attitude ruts, injury ruts, and ‘I’m not losing any weight’ ruts. I think we’ve all been there and done those, right?

The rut I’m currently in is a cooking rut. I’m SO sick of eating the same things, but it’s easy to fall into the habit of making the same things over and over. You do it because it’s familiar, you know the kids will eat it, you know how many calories/points it has, etc. So many excuses, people, and I’m the biggest excuse maker of all. You want to know what I made for dinner tonight? Spaghetti. Yep. Really exciting, huh? I did throw in some rotini pasta instead of the typical angel hair, at least. Spaghetti is my fall back recipe – the one I fall back on when I have no idea what else to make, or I’m too lazy to get creative. Tonight, I was lazy!

So what am I going to do to get out of this rut? Well, I’ve already started. I bought 3 new cooking magazines over the weekend, and I’ve been perusing new recipes all day. I’ve definitely found some that I’ll be trying (and sharing with all of you if they’re any good).

Here are the mags I bought:

  • Taste of Home – Healthy Cooking – Turkey & Trimmings (guilt free!). It’s time to start gearing up for the holidays, so I’m going to plan some healthy changes to my Thanksgiving menu. Keep a look out for some featured Turkey Day recipes here at the Sisterhood!
  • Weight Watchers 20 Minute Recipes. This one speaks for itself. HELLO 20 minutes. I can handle that for sure. The magazine has 63 breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes with Points values of 6 or less. It’s all good.
  • Eating Well – This magazine has a picture of a delicious apple on the cover and boasts 38 FAST healthy recipes, and 6 EASY one-pot meals.

Can you tell I’m all about fast and easy? Yep.

I challenge you to try a new recipe this week. Find one in one of the magazines I mentioned, or pull out one of those cookbooks you already own, blow the dust off and dig in. Let’s don’t forget all of the fabulous recipes we’ve already shared here at the Sisterhood. They are tried and true, folks, and that’s no bull.

Let us know what you plan to try, and come back here after the fact and let us know how it went. If it was so good you want to shout from the rooftops, send us the recipe and we’ll feature it here on the Sisterhood!

You can treat yourself to a free issue of Taste of Home – Healthy Cooking by clicking here! You’re welcome.

You can also get a free trial issue of Eating Well here! Oh, no, there’s no need to kiss me.

I totally understand that! It usually takes me a while to get tired of the same old things, but I do, and when I do, I'm usually bad. Boo. Great ideas!!

Thanks for sharing Christy! I hear you on the challenge of making dinner, I may have to look at that ww 20 minute magazine. My issue is having to count all the points so if I have more recipes already calculated for me, it'd make my life much easier!
