Drink the Water & Day #5::CamelBak Giveaway *UPDATED*

[ 83 ] 11/05/2009 |

Random.org generated #8 for us, so Kirsten @ Living in a Girl’s World is our WINNER!!!!!! Congratulations, hooker! We love you :)

We all know that keeping hydrated in the hot summer months is really important, but have you really thought about why you need to stay hydrated in the winter?

Why You’re Dry in Winter
Winter is peak season for flu and colds, illnesses that produce fever and result in extra fluid loss through the lungs. The air is also drier in winter than it is in summer, which explains why dry skin and chapped lips are so prevalent in colder weather. Indoors, heaters often suck moisture from the air.

You may not feel sweaty, but “winter activities, like skiing and shoveling snow, cause you to sweat and increase your need for water,”  says Karen Miller-Kovach, MS, RD, chief scientist of Weight Watchers International.

Drinking too many hot, caffeinated beverages, like regular tea, coffee and hot chocolate, can actually compound the problem. Caffeine is a diuretic that can further dehydrate your body. It’s a good idea to limit yourself to three or fewer cups a day of these beverages.

But I’m Not Thirsty!
“Thirst is not a good indicator of fluid needs,” says Jackie A. Newgent, RD, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “By the time you feel thirsty, you’re past the need for fluid replacement and on the downhill road to dehydration.”

Water is necessary to maintain a healthy body temperature, to digest food, to transport nutrients to the tissues, to remove waste and even to breathe (we lose a lot of water through exhalation, as well as through perspiration and excretion). “Water is needed for virtually every body function,” says

Newgent. “That doesn’t change just because it’s cold outside.”

Wow!! What a cool way to keep us hydrated!
I *usually* drink about 96 or more ounces of water a day! During and after my exercise routine at night I drink at least 32 ounces and usually MORE! I have not been doing that well over the past week, though. I've been extremely busy and have been forgetting my water and I can TELL!! Back on the water bandwagon TODAY!

I drink around 64 oz on an average day. I do find it harder to get it in during the winter months but am hoping to keep up at the rate I am drinking now. This camelback looks very cool!

  • Grace

I drink probably around 4 glasses of water a day. Not sure how much hydration I get from my food, etc.

not entering but LURVE ME the camelbak. Seriously. Love it. I have one. I wish it wouldn't be weird to walk around wearing it all day long. Don't be afraid to hydrate! That's what I always say!

I try to fill up my water bottle a few times a day and it holds 32 oz. I drink more in the summer for sure.

  • dietprogramdropout

I am home most of the time. I try to drink at least 2 quart jars of water. I fill it up, leave it on the counter. On cardio days I try to drink an extra quart during and after my workout.

  • misty1975

I don't drink as much water as I should.. work towards at least 64oz a day. Haven't done that in quite some time

I'm usually a great drinker but when I get cold I hardly drink at all. Right now I've been freezing so I would say I only drink 4 glasses of water a day. :(

So seriously, I drink between 80 and 96 ounces of water a day. There is not much else that we do drink in this house. Lots and lots of water. We use and LOVE our camel packs. We're needing to get some for the kids now and even though this is too big, I'd give mine to one of the kids and use this one. :-)
