The Inaugural Rethink Your Shrink Weigh-In!!

December 30th, 2009 | Comments | Posted in Welcome | by christieo

Here we are!!! Calling all sisters in the spirit of weight-loss and fitness! It’s day one of the first challenge of the new decade!! It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for since the cheese cube reared its ugly head during that holiday cocktail party this year! (Perhaps even longer!)

Yes ladies, it’s time to “Rethink Your Shrink!”

This is the day you’ve decided to change your mind about food and health. This is the day you’ve decided to venture outside of your comfort zone. This is the day you’ve taken the first step toward becoming the person you have always wanted to be. The person you picture. No more waiting around. The change starts now and it starts with you, within you. Claim today and every day as yours starting this very minute! Because 2010 is your year.

Here at the sisterhood, you’ll find an undying support and encouragement for each other, a shoulder to cry on when things get tough (because they will), an ear for listening when you don’t feel like going on, and a hand to pull you up when you’ve fallen off the wagon. There is no judging. There is only love. When you join us, we’re sisters in spirit and we are with you through thick and thin. Literally.

Rethink Your Shrink is about changing from the inside. It’s about looking back so that you can move forward by changing the present. We will re-evaluate our eating habits, our patterns, our obstacles and our activity levels. We will take with us what worked in 2009 and dispose of what didn’t.

This challenge last 7 weeks. At the end of this, you will see a difference. You’ll have new friends. You’ll have tried new things. You’ll have changed your habits.

Each week on Monday, we will challenge you to a project, affectionately called “The Monday Project”. We will ask you to look closely at a particular area in your life and we’ll ask you to do something about it for that week. Yes, we’ll send you out into the world with your thoughts and we will ask that you come back Friday and post a link to your findings so we all can see what happened and we can grow from your words. These little projects aren’t mandatory, but they will allow you to get a glimpse of yourself from the inside and help you grow during your journey. (Plus they’re just fun! And I promise, they do help!) Because honestly, you can eat right and work out but if something from within you doesn’t change, the part of you that will allow you to get right back into bad habits after this is all over will still be there. And this is about changing your thoughts in relation to food and exercise, which will allow the weight-loss to follow and allow it to stay. Because we want the weight to come off and stay off.

Each Wednesday, like in past challenges and like today, we will weigh-in right here. You post your weigh-in weight along with a link to your blog with your post so we can all come by and leave you comments and sisterly love. The more sisters you visit, the more will visit you and vice versa. And the virtual support is key! If you don’t have a blog, that’s ok! Just leave your weight in the comments and we’ll talk to you right here.

Throughout this challenge we will have mini exercise challenges. And these make exercising really fun!! We’re here to try to take any “boring” out of this weight-loss journey and insert some “accountability!” By losing weight with my bloggy friends, I have lost 40 pounds! It works! This support system does work!

Of course we will also have giveaways throughout, well, because we roll like that! And also, tips, recipes, confessions, etc etc, well, because all of us at the Sisterhood have big mouths and lots to say! So you see? You must come here all the time, because we will post a lot and all of these posts will be really really useful and will help you to change your mind about how sucky the weight-loss journey can be.

Now before you go weigh-in, we want everyone to start off right. We want you to have the tools to be successful. We want you to have a plan. We want to arm you with resources. There are three things that will be key in your success and they are food, activity, and support. So in the coming days, try to do the following:

1. Sort out your food plan. Will you count calories? www.sparkpeople.com is perfect for that. Will you count points on Weight Watchers? (That one helped me break through a plateau.) Will you do Body for Life? Bob Greene’s Diet? Find an eating plan that you will most likely stick to. Then, go purge your pantries and your fridges. Go stock up on the good stuff. And if you’re not logging your food online, we highly recommend a food journal. It’s a big pain in the butt at first to log each calorie and each food, but it’s so worth the hassle in the end! And it helps you to pinpoint poor eating habits like snacking at night or that 3pm Mountain Dew (hubby!)

2. Get your workouts in order. Are you going to Shred? Are you going to run? Walk? Spin class? Do you have a run training plan? Do you have an athletic event to get ready for? Find one! Go sign up for a run that takes place in 7 weeks (www.active.com). Or find a DVD that takes 30 days to do, like Jillian’s 30 day shred or the EA Sports Active 30 day challenge! And then, literally write your workouts into your day and week for the next 7 weeks. Because if you don’t set aside the time for yourself, someone else will steal your time and for the next 7 weeks you have to make YOU a priority! I’ve seen it happen, everyone wants my time!!! BUT NO! I claim a 30 to 60 minute window MINE each day! MINE MINE MINE! You are worth it. Let me repeat: You are worth it.Start giving yourself back some of your worth by giving yourself back some of your own time. Find the best time for you and set it aside and let everyone know you’re serious about it because otherwise that mom/wife/sister/daughter guilt will set in and you need support at home! If you haven’t worked out in a while, talk to your doctor and get a quick checkup and physical. (Disclaimer: we are not doctors or fitness experts! We recommend things that have worked for us and we share our own experiences, that’s pretty much it. The doctors are the real professionals, we’re just here for support! But we do mean business! I’m just sayin.)

3. Finally, join join join! Have you joined our forum over at The ‘Hood? We post recipes, talk about exercising and gear, show off our pictures, cuss like truckers (just kidding. Sort of.) and chit chat. We’re also on Twitter and we tweet all day long (when do we have time for anything else!) We are also on Daily Mile where we log our workouts and send each other motivation and high fives. You can log anything from walks to rides to runs to swims and the all-encompassing “other”. And here’s a hint — we may have a mini-challenge using Daily Mile really soon!

Yes, we at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans want to infiltrate your entire life and mind so that we can help you reach your goal, whether it’s to run a 5k, maintain your current weight, lose 10 pounds or lose 100. We had some amazing successes and milestones here and we want you to be one of them! And when you do reach milestones, we have pretty little buttons for you to have for your blog! They’re BRAND NEW! Here, these are badges of honor. (When you reach these milestones, we will tell everyone, so make sure you let us know when you do!)

So, starting today, right now, go weigh in. Post about it on your blog. No, you don’t have to post your weight on your blog (I don’t, are you crazy!?) You can just post pounds lost on your  blog. But since we’re a “safe place”, please do leave your weight in the comments below and post a link to your blog. (We won’t tell anyone!)

Besides weighing in, there is only one mandatory rule for the next 7 weeks: THERE IS NO NEGATIVE SELF-TALK! NONE! Did you know it takes 12 positive statements to counteract just one negative one? So whenever you find yourself talking nasty to yourself, turn it around. Find the positive. If you feel frustrated, think about something good you’ve done. If someone compliments you, ACCEPT IT! Do not say, “THIS OLD THING??” If you say you can’t, show yourself you can.

I know this is the longest post ever and thanks for sticking it out this far.

Gosh, I’m so excited I can hardly stand it. I personally want to reach goals and overcome hurdles I’ve never reached before. I want to be better than I ever have before. I want to be a superhero! And I want to be on this ride with all of you! My first foray into weightloss was post-baby, 40 pounds overweight and at my personal rockbottom. I ran a 5k using the Couch to 5k plan then kept going to lose more weight, run further and faster and try new things (like biking and swimming too!)

So let’s let it start today. When we look back on 2010, I want us all to see how hard we’ve worked and how far we’ve come. 2010 is YOUR YEAR! Don’t let another year get away from you without taking back your body and your life!

So what do you think? Are you ready to Rethink Your Shrink? JOIN THE REVOLUTION! Change your body, change your mind! Start with just one little tiny comment below.

P.S. Go check out the new buttons Christy has been slaving over. They are FANTASTIC! New year, new buttons… Grab away!

Forgot to add: Starting weight 124.5lbs

  • Wow! Preach it, Sister Christie O'! Now you've got ME all excited!!!

Starting weight is 191.0. That's 2.6 from last week, but year-to-date I'm down 4 pounds from last year (and a total of 74 pound loss since June 2008). I'm ready to take it on down to goal (165) in 2010. The sugar-free yet highly caloric toffee is GONE, the homemade baked goods are OUT OF HERE, and IT'S ON!!!
  • Woot! You're hitting your goal this year for sure!!
  • Yes! We mean business! ;p
  • spiffytiffy3
  • First off, I cannot even believe that I didn't get over here yesterday to leave my starting weight!!! I have not joined a challenge in quiet awhile and it is very apparent when I put on my clothes ugh.... Anyway, my starting weight is 166lbs. I need to loose about 10 pounds in the next seven weeks and I need to make a better effort of blogging!!! Not that that is part of the challenge or anything!
Okay... so I think I am off to somewhat of a good start. I ran for 30 mins today but eat two cookies... oops... I need to change my eating habits... I'm not worried about the exercise part of it! I LOVE to EAT! Wish me luck. And good luck to all!
  • You're going to do great!
  • You can do it, Danielle. Just focus on your eating!
  • AmandaW
I'm in, too! I'll have to weigh in tomorrow, have been avoiding the scale like a monkey at a fireworks show.
  • Woo-hoo! Good to see you here!
  • YIPPPEEEEEEEE! So glad you're joining us! LOVE!
  • AmandaW
just fyi, Christy, Disqus is acting weird here and for the 'hood for me.

  • Hey hooker,
Can you tell me what kind of issues you're having so I know where to start?!!

    MWAH!
  • fanclublady
On December 29, 2008, I made a promise to myself that I would lose 100 pounds in 2009 (I weighed 282). While it was a hard goal - I knew I could push myself to lose it. Today, December 31, 2009 - I weighed in this morning at exactly 100 pounds lighter than I was then (182). I still want to lose more so when I saw this challenge, I figured that I would join in and hopefully kick into gear to hit those last 20-30 pounds that I want to lose.
  • That is AMAZING!!!
  • I think it is so AWESOME that you made a commitment to yourself and you KEPT it. WAY TO GO on your amazing loss, girl!! One hundred pounds GONE!

Thanks for joining our challenge! I'm sure you'll find the support and motivation you need to lose those last 20-30 pounds!
  • fanclublady
I forgot to include my blog: http://fanclublady.blogspot.com.

Hey, I'm joining the bandwagon too...seems like a good one to be on...I've started a blog. My starting weight was 238. I am down to 227. http://projectitaly.blogspot.com/2009/12/here-i...
  • btw - it won't let me log in... I don't know why. made me post as a guest.
  • Are you talking about Disqus, the commenting thing? Do you have an account set up? You can just go to disqus.com and set on us. Only takes a few minutes and it will keep you logged in, so you don't have to fill in all your info every time you want to comment. You can even add a photo of yourself :)
  • Eeek.. So, here I am.. I hope that 2010 is my year.. OUR year. ( won't be posting my weight on my blog, just here)

  • Tobey13
  • I'm in! I'm still Christmas-ing with extended families, so I'm not even at home to hop on my scale, but I'll be checking in next week for sure. Sounds like an awesome challenge!
  • Glad you are with us again!

    Happy New Year!
  • Glad to see you, Tammi! Have a great time vacationing :)
  • weightlossmama
Would love to join this challenge.
I don't have a weight loss blog... should have started one when I started but didn't think to do it.
Starting weight is 216.6 lbs. Down 0.2 lbs from last week (quite happy with that since it was over Christmas and I think TOM is starting) and down 85.6 lbs from when I started in April. I am following Weight Watchers.

I had 2 friends doing weight watchers with me, attending meetings weekly but the one has become lifetime (yay for her!) and the other quit. I am seeking support as my journey is only partly done. Goal weight is set at 150 lbs for now. LOL
  • It's not too late to start a blog, it's really quite therapeutic!

Glad to have you on board with us!
  • babyboy3
So I am having computer issues so I am not blogging this time. My starting weight is 198. I was very surprised it was the same as last week since I didn't make the best choices this last week. I also did not exercise while at my moms as the tree was in the way and the tv in the basement was too old to do the Wii. I did not know that ahead of time so I did not bring the 30 day shred. But i have worked out twice this week so far. Excited for the new challenge.
  • Sounds like you are off to a good start this week!
  • StacieinAtlanta
Ok I am in. I need to get my butt in gear. :)

Is this where we post our starting weight?
  • crookedeyebrow
    yep! welcome!!
  • SJs_April
Yes! Post here or on your blog and come back and leave us a link to your post! Good luck!
  • Okay, I'm starting over NOW. My current weight is 176.8 and NEEDS to be A LOT less than that. Like 20 lbs. less. But, I will settle for 10 or so (to start). So, exercising begins tomorrow, as does the eating more sensibly. I need the support too. I'm a "sweet" addict and 3 months postpartum so I have these things NOT going for me...
  • SJs_April
We're here for ya friend! You'll do great! I just know it!
  • I've been on sugar overload the last few weeks, but I have had NO CANDY TODAY. I have a headache now. ;p
  • Bari_F
I'm only up 1.4 this week, which for a major holiday is pretty good. I'm starting this challenge at 161.2. I need to get back to the 150's people!

  • I LOVE! this post! I've decided that 2010 is going to be all about getting further in my weight loss journey. I'm going to see true progress, and I cannot wait. Thank you for providing such an amazing support system!!!

I'm following WW, training with a modified version of C25K, and have hired a personal trainer. I cannot wait to celebrate all of my successes!!!
  • SJs_April
Wow! Sounds like you have a great game plan!! Good luck!
  • Welcome! Sounds like you've got a great plan!
  • Sounds like you are setting yourself up for SUCCESS! Glad you are joining us!
  • Starting weight = 196.7
Weight gain of 0.1 for the Christmas break.

Hi all... I have been on hiatus for a few months, tried so hard earlier this year and practically gained weight, got really discouraged, learned I have Hypothyroidism, not happy about being on meds but nice to know what was wrong, maintained previous weight pretty well, starting todays challenge at 172 and happy to be back with thyroid meds in hand : ) Good luck everyone!!!
  • SJs_April
It's so hard when you have something medical going on. Glad you have it figured out and glad you're joining us this challenge!
  • Good to see you back! I'm glad you got the medical side figured out!

Fantastic post Christie!!!!! I am so excited for the this challenge to start. I am only online for this quick comment but then I won't be online again until late tonight or tomorrow morning. I must be the only one who gained weight from the last weigh-in but I'm OK with it- I will lose the few extra pounds quickly.

I cannot wait to meet all ya'll new folks!!!!!!

  • I'm in, I'm in!! I'm starting out at 132, and though my focus is not on weight loss, it is about um...shrinkage!! I am looking forward to feeling better overall, consuming more healthy snacks, and having a tummy that fits my wardrobe tastes! Godspeed!!!

  • I'm totally read to Rethink My Shrink! I realized a couple of weeks ago that I'm actually ending 2009 heavier than when it started due to my lack of commitment this year. :-(

My normal weigh-in day is Saturday, so I'll be reporting my loss here each week on the following Wednesday. Here are my stats for the start of the challenge:

    Starting Weight: 275.4
    Loss This Week: 3.2
    Total Loss: 61.2

I haven't blogged about this yet, but will later today. My weight loss blog can be found at http://www.melgetsfit.com
  • Thanks ladies! =)
  • SJs_April
Good luck this challenge! I know you'll do great!
  • Hey Mel, I also weigh in on Saturdays! I lost weight throughout 2009 but really slacked since August and have been hovering around the same 5 pounds for months! This challenge is a great way to rethink and refocus our efforts!! We can do this together!
  • That's a great loss for the week! Wow!
  • I'm ready for a fresh year, a fresh start and lots of VICTORY for everyone here!!! My weight is 154 and I'm determined to get down to my healthy weight in 2010! (... about a 20-25 weight loss goal)

    http://teri-free2bme.blogspot.com
  • I am ready to go peeps!
Can't wait to make astounding leaps with you all!

  • charpenette
I really want to do this because I love the idea of the goals and bettering oneself and exercise and such, but I'm also not supposed to lose any weight (I know, punch me), so I guess I'll just have to follow along!
  • SJs_April
Yay!! I'm so glad you're joining us this challenge!!!
  • Hey Erin - I'm glad you're here even if you ARE so skinny I wanna smack you. And you know I mean that as a compliment. ;-)
  • BrookeF
Lissa is totally right. its all about changing your life and being more healthy. for some that means losing weight. others it just means changing eat habits and being more active.

like she said there are some maintenance people around here - Thea just went into maintenance. I just came out of maintenance retirement (i wanna shoot for another 5 or so pounds).
  • Erin, you don't have to lose weight!! We will be having mini-challenges focused on bettering yourself, as well as fitness challenges.

Kirsten has been with us since the beginning and she doesn't need to lose any weight.

(I totally want to punch you both in the face, though) :)
  • charpenette
    Punch away!
And that makes me happy. I really want to participate, but I didn't want to be the jerk who was like, Yeah, so, I don't need to lose weight, cough.
  • Erin, you and your skinny tush are welcome here ;) We'll be doing lots of things that aren't entirely weight loss focused. Call it 'self-improvement'.
  • Tobey13
I'm in! No blog post yet but I'm up +1.4 which is no big surprise but its my last increase as today I start to Re-Think!!!
  • SJs_April
Glad you're joining us this challenge!
  • Here we go!!
  • So glad you're in on this one! It's going to be a fantastic challenge!

Nice job on the weight loss! It is so tough after having a baby. I delivered mine at 204 and lost almost 70 pounds. Keep it going!!
  • Hi Ladies! I'm taking the leap and joining in! :) I had a baby 7 weeks ago and would like to start losing some of the "baby" weight (and the non-baby weight). Ideally I'd like to lose around 50 pounds. I'm weighing in at.... gulp.... 178.4! I'm very excited to join in with all of you. I'm new to the site and new to this type of challenge. http://www.unorganizedmomma.com/2009/12/im-back...

My first shrinking jeans challenge! Checking in at 157. My goals are to get down to 130 being healthy and fit along the way (no quick fad diets for me)
  • Great plan!!
  • Welcome to the Sisterhood! So glad you're here!
  • Great to meet you and so happy you're here! Love your smart approach - fad diets are no good. We're here to do it the RIGHT way! You've already got a head start with a great attitude!
    Welcome!
  • BrookeF
welcome! :) hopefully we'll be able to walk (or run) beside you as you head toward 130. :)
  • SJs_April
We're so glad to have you!
  • dianestokes
Thank you Brooke! Glad to be here :)
  • I just added a blog to give me more motivation. I added it to my profile here, but not sure how this all works yet! Just reading these posts make me feel like the support is there---and thank you so much!

Okay, today's weigh-in is 134 lbs I am sure after I pig out for New Years it will be the same next Wednesday! Okay maybe not pig out but I might drink my calories.
  • lilsum
I was totally being sarcastic about drinking my calories but I will have a little to drink, I hardly ever drink and the new year will be a reason to celebrate. Don't worry, we are going to have our wii on hand. I am sure I will loose some weight in my wrists while playing Mario Kart.

    You crack me up.
  • I hear you on New Years...but, there's nothing a little exercise and healthy eating won't fix in a few days! No worries, and glad you're here!
  • BrookeF
even if you do splurge tomorrow night, try to make up for it the rest of the week with smart choices. and sometimes maintaining through a holiday week is the best we can ask for.

My starting weight is 228. Normally I would follow that up with how I am embarressed adn going to go hide, but not today. It is what it is and every day that number will go down. :)
  • SJs_April
LOVE your attitude! Good luck, you'll do great!
  • I love your attitude - you're right - it WILL go down. No need to hide, no judgment here. We're all in this to help each other succeed! You can do it!
  • BrookeF
no need to hide. you can't get all the encouragement and support out of this site if you're behind a rock!
  • Kim
Brand new to the site and to the challenge - here's to starting 2010 off on the right foot!

    Starting at 254. http://nevertrustabigbutt.blogspot.com/2009/12/...

158 even this morning. I made sure to bring healthy snacks and lunch from home to keep me from running to Wendy's for a greasy cheeseburger (although you KNOW it sounds better than Grapples.)

Ok, I got this site from my friend Jamee and I'm super stoked to be losing the weight! My goal is to lose at least 10 pounds in the next 7 weeks. I think that's pretty reasonable. When I weighed myself this morning, I was 174.4.
This morning, I actually ate breakfast (weird!)... oatmeal, it actually tasted really good!
I hope to find some nice friends and some awesome support systems through this site. Good luck everyone! :)
  • crookedeyebrow
i am so happy to see that you joined. good luck and you are i8n great company!
  • SJs_April

  • tlb81003
212.6 It's expected. I'm so thankful this is a new year, a new start. Jeff and I have both commited together to make some big changes in our lives. Complete changes. Not just to change our weight but to change what we eat (which will present challenges mentally...it's a conscience issue), how we live, how much $$ we spend, etc. We're tired of just being. We want to LIVE. His Mom was here for the last week and how sick she is and what her daily routine consists of was the visual I needed to make me say, enough is really enough. I don't want to be like that and I am aware that I could easily become like that. It's on. Time for the new Tami
  • crookedeyebrow
its going to be a great, healthy new year for you!
  • SJs_April
Loving the attitude! Good luck, I know you're too great!
  • Amen to that. You can do it, Sister! And we're so here for you!
  • BrookeF
its so much easier when you have someone committed to help you along the way - as you help them! :)
  • BrookeF
  • Starting weight for this challenge: 255.8

I've already started counting calories over @ sparkpeople (today is day 3) and now I need to incorporate exercise in.

I will blog once I get my laptop back, hopefully Apple doesn't have to keep it too long.
  • SJs_April
Good luck this challenge! Hope you get your laptop back soon!
  • Happy you're in on this challenge!
  • My starting weight for this challenge is 239.4 lbs. This is actually down 2.2 lbs from last week which I find shocking not only because of 1)the Christmas holiday and 2)my 'friend' is in town but that doesn't mean I can't be committed from now on right :)

Here is to an amazing challenge for us all... GOOD LUCK SISTERS (and Brothers)

  • BrookeF
you've had a set back, sure. but it looks like you're back on track :) good job.
  • I have to say that exercise and being healthy is 99% mental. It's so easy to convince yourself to NOT do the things you know will make you feel better. I love this challenge, and I can't wait for Monday to find out what the first project is. Have I mentioned lately that I love the Sisterhood?
  • crookedeyebrow
and the sisterhood love you! Isn't it great all the love going on up in here? it is.
  • Hey chicky! Dang if you aren't right about the mental stuff! Let us rock this challenge!
  • Can I say - totally cool!!! Thanks so much!!! I am sooooo excited about this new challenge! Change is in the air!

I'm up one pound from last week. Considering the fiasco the week has been, I'm pretty pleased with that! Starting weight for this new challenge: 170.

Oh!! LOVE the new look around here! Very super-hero, can-do-anything-ish!!

    http://www.ohlssons.be/karena/?p=514

  • kay6672
It's great! I can literally hear the music from The Incredibles in my head right now!!
  • crookedeyebrow
    I keep thinking "no Cape!"
  • The new buttons are great!

I thought the challenge was starting today, so here I am. My first post: http://www.theunlikelyhousewife.com/2009/12/kic...

I hope you'll forgive me if I don't feel comfortable posting my weight, but I promise I'll faithfully post and changes in it weekly!
  • lilsum
I love these new buttons too! How do you add them to the blog? I am a new blogger on wordpress and not sure how to add them. Any help you can give me?
BTW would love to check out your blogs!
  • sorry I am so late in replying! my inbox has morphed into a black home since our last move.

If you click on "grab a button" on the top menu here, you will find a page with all the buttons and corresponding codes. are you on Blogger or Wordpress? You basically need to copy the HTML code below the button you want to use and paste them into a widget. On wordpress it needs to be a text widget on Blogger I believe there are HTML widgets. Save... et voilà! The button is on your sidebar :-)
  • whatever you're comfortable with is ok with us!! Glad you're here, sister!!!
  • townto
