Fitness Friday::Virtual Team in Training

January 1st, 2010 | Comments | Posted in Christy | by christy

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe, fun, and healthy holiday, and that no one is hungover today (right?!).

Our new challenge, Rethink Your Shrink, is all about joining the revolution by stepping outside of your comfort zone. Well, we at the Sisterhood are stepping WAY outside of our comfort zones and committing to a 1/2 marathon this summer! That’s right, we are all going to run and/or walk 13.1 miles together.

Now for some of you old-timers, this 1/2 marathon talk is old hat, heck, lots of you have already committed and registered! But for you newcomers, this might come as a bit of a surprise. I mean, we’re already asking you to do homework, and make lists, and set goals, and now we’re asking you to run and/or walk a 1/2 marathon with us in 6 months.

Why yes, we are!

You see, we have formed Team Shrink, a Virtual Team in Training (VTNT) Team benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Starting January 30th, everyone on our team will train together using the tools and coaching VTNT provides, with the goal of running the San Diego Rock ‘n Roll 1/2 Marathon on June 6, 2010.

Anyone can do this. We have members of all fitness levels already registered to run and walk. The training involved will take you from not being able to run at all, to running a 1/2 marathon. And with all the support and encouragement you’ll receive from your fellow Team Shrink members, there’s really no way you fail!

If you are interested in Joining our VTNT Team Shrink, you’ll need to contact Kirsten (who is coordinating with TNT on behalf of the Sisterhood) for a registration packet. There is a $50 registration fee you’ll need to send in with your form, and it will be applied directly to your fundraising goal!

Yes, there is a fundraising goal of $2900, but keep in mind this amount covers all of your travel expenses including airfare, hotel, and race registration. Plus, you’ll be given all the tools you need to raise the money including form letters and emails as well as an online fundraising page.

If you have any questions, you can leave a comment on this post, or start a discussion on the TNT page at the ‘hood! What? You haven’t already joined the the ‘hood? Well please run on over there now! That’s where we’ll be doing most of our planning and training, so you won’t want to miss a thing.

Here’s a little more information about the San Diego 1/2 Marathon (taken from the VTNT site):

Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®  June 6, 2010
Participants will be treated to a BRAND NEW Rock ‘n’ Roll course in 2010. San Diego, known for its scenic coastline and laid-back lifestyle, has so much to offer participants both on and off the course! The thoughtfully designed walker and runner-friendly route will run past a variety of signature attractions in San Diego.

It’s a 39.3-mile street party as 55 live bands perform on 30 stages along the two routes, playing every genre of music, from country to alternative to good old fashioned rock ’n’ roll. Spirit squads and themed water stations add to the festivities, with a finish line celebration and headliner concert capping off an action-packed weekend.

When resilience runs out, inspiration kicks in. Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego is a proud partner of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. And LLS is the leading nonprofit dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and services for patients. Motivation comes from knowing that funds raised by many of the participants help find new treatments and cures for blood cancers. During the 12-year partnership, $142.8 million (net) has been raised by way of the Rock ’n’ Roll San Diego Marathon to advance LLS’s mission.

Now doesn’t that sound like an amazing time? Not only do you get the experience of completing a 1/2 marathon in an awesome setting, but you get to do it with Sisters whom you’ve trained with and come to love! Remember, it’s all about Rethinking Your Shrink and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Won’t you Join the Revolution?

I have been thinking about this since ya'll mentioned it but never talked to dh about it till last night. After discussing it with him and listening to reason I am NOT going to do it with you guys. My already bad knees would probably be in REALLY bad shape if I did this -- even if I did it as a WALK! Training every day, with the constant pounding my knees would take would probably do me in. HOWEVER, if finances permit I MAY come WATCH and CHEER ya'll on!! We'll see what the first 6 month of 2010 hold for us!!

    Can't wait!
  • How fun! Unfortunately you won't see me in San Diego, but my hubby and I have committed to running the Fargo 1/2 Marathon which is local to us. It won't be quite the same, but I'll know the accomplishment of a 1/2 marathon. Yikes!!

  • I'm in as well! I can't wait to meet everyone. :) I'm trying to be patient until the end of the month when they local TNT groups start forming here in SoCal. Did I ever mention that patience isn't one of my strong points? ;P I'm not letting that stop me from starting to train though. I'm going to get out and start walking in preparation beginning today. :)
  • I love it. LOVE IT!
I can't wait to show myself I can run 13.1 miles and meet all my sisters.
    Woot!

I, too, am super-pumped about this. It IS a win-win all the way around.

Raise money for a wonderful organization
Turn my body into a lean, mean running machine (HA!)
    Meet all of you

    I posted about it!

  • I'm in! I can't wait to meet my sisters in person. I am overwhelmed at the thought of going from *cough* NOTHING *cough* to a 1/2 in only 6 months. And I gotta admit the fundraising scares the crap outta me. But we never know what we can do till we do it, right? :o)
  • I cannot tell you HOW EXCITED I AM to do this!! It's a win-win-WIN!

I will be pushing myself mentally and physically, raising money for a wonderful cause, AND I get to travel and meet awesome people!
  • i'm very very excited about doing this and meeting all the sisters in person! woot! i hope with everything that those who believe they "can't" or who have never ever considered this, just take a moment to deeply consider it. the self-discovery that you find along the way in training for something like this is the most amazing gift you could ever ever give yourself. and i believe that yes, whatever fitness level you are, you can do it. YOU CAN!!
