The Monday Project: The Future ME

[ 22 ] 01/25/2010 |

**UPDATE** Duh! I almost forgot to announce the winners from last week’s project! They are Renee at CutieBootieCakes, Jennifer at PrairieKnitWit Cooks and Shrinks and Audrey at The Lewis 4! Send me your snail mail if I don’t have it already!

Rethink Your Shrink, The Monday Project

Project Peopllllllllllllllllllllle!!!! (Said like at the beginning of “Whoop There It Is!” where he yells, “Party Peopllllle!!”

It probably sounded better in my head.

Anyway, it’s Monday!! Time for another Monday Project!! Aren’t you excited????

Well, you know how when you look back at a year, you sometimes think, “Holy crap! I never saw that coming!” As if you were talking to “past-self” who was looking ahead at the year, and you wish you could tell “past-self” all the ”stuff” that was about to go down  – good and bad. But obviously we can’t because of that whole space-time continuum and the obviously very complicated science surrounding it therefortowith…

And you know how sometimes you think to yourself, “I wish I knew then what I know now!” And you know how sometimes you look back and wish you could send “current” self back to the past to tell yourself that something you’re about to do a really bad idea? Kind of like I wish I could send “current self” back to past-self to tell myself that letting my children have that free cookie in the bakery when we went grocery shopping was really like opening a huge can of worms and should be avoided at all costs. Or that the crazy wall of hairsprayed bangs that I had was a bad idea because I’d end up with all these pictures of myself looking like a lunatic…

This week is sort of like that, only in a more positive way.

For this week’s project, I want you to close your eyes. (Well, after you read this.) And pretend that it’s January — of 2011.

One full year ahead.

And when you think about January 2011, think about where you are sitting. What you look like. Where you are. Think about all the things you did in 2010. How far you’ve come. The goals you’ve reached. The obstacles you faced in 2010. The things you learned. Visualize where you will be. Physically, mentally, emotionally. I know you don’t have much to go on since we’re not even out of January 2010 yet. But that’s kind of the whole purpose.

Now, ”future self” (*this is me waving to  your future self and saying “Hi!!!”*), go ahead and write ”current self” a letter. Tell yourself what you’ve done in 2010 and who you’ve become. Tell yourself about all the scale and non-scale victories you’ve had. Anything that you think is valuable for your current self to know, go ahead, tell it.

Write the letter to yourself like it actually happened. No hypotheticals. Because “future-self” actually knows what went on in 2010! You have to trust her (or him)!! Channel “Future Self”. So that’s what it is this week. “Future-self,” write “current-self” a letter about what 2010 is like and what you hope for 2011.

Blog it and on Friday, link it. This is one of those things you can actually hold in your hand when January 2011 comes around and you can see for yourself just what you’ve done. I am sure you will agree with yourself on that day and maybe even surprise yourself. Because you’ve got 11 more months to make it real. And you will. Because you rock and because you’re you, and ps. I already know what you’re made of. (And because future me told me so.)

You can also print it, sign it and stick it on your Motivation Wall. And if you haven’t done your Motivation Wall, this is a perfect time to finish that up too! Have a wonderful week, sisters (and brother!)

Wow!! Christie….You are really pushing me out of my little box of comfort!! Thanks for this challenge. Glad I have a whole week to figure it out and write it!

Love it! I've done this before, kind of, when I wrote a letter to my 20 year old self when I turned 30. But I guess that was looking back – this is forward. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

  • BrookeF

am i a dork for having most of this planned out already?? it might make me sad, in a year though if i don't accomplish all i want to.

  • Nancy

Okay, this is going to take a little thought. Glad I have a few days to think it through.

  • FiddlersBride

One of the neatest things, to me at least, on last season's Biggest Loser was when the “old/before” contestants looked into the camera to give their “future/after” selves a pep talk about what a long way they'd come and how much they had accomplished. It was the same kind of concept that this Monday project is — anyone else see it? It was so moving to me. I kept watching and thinking “what would I tell MY future self?” And viola! Now I get the chance do to this for a Monday Project!

    Two housekeeping things –
    a) I will be out of town and lacking computer access on Friday (gasp!) so is it OK if I blog by this by Thursday before I leave town and my no-computer 4 day weekend? How do I let someone know I have done my homework? : )

    b) I did do last Monday's project and linked up on Saturday. Just wanted to give a heads up on that in case anyone thinks the dog ate my homework! I was a little late getting my link up.

Looking forward to reading everyone's Monday Project posts! I will be catching up on posts on Sunday after I have dealt with my withdrawal!

If you want to email your link to me on Thursday, I'll post it Friday for you!!!

You totally gave me the inspiration to vlog this project instead of just writing it out! GREAT IDEA!!!!

I LOVE that you saw that! This is EXACTLY WHAT THAT IS! i too, loved that on BL. This week's homework isn't really a “right now” tangible, as much as it will be in the future. So it's the homework that keeps on giving, in essence! LOL

  • http://www.babytealeaves.blogspot.com Christie O.

Nope, you're supposed to have it planned! But the letter back to yourself is supposed to be about whether you did it or not! :P and you're supposed to pretend of course that you did in your letter. (which of course i am sure you will, think back circa 2009 pre-5k. who are we kidding.)

oooh oooh ooh! great idea, hooker! i may just cheat off you and do the same!

  • DALewis

Ok, do you watch LOST? Cause this whole past self, future self, scientific post totally reminds me of that – my favorite show, by the way…

This is really stepping outside of my comfort zone. But *sigh* that IS what this is all about, right?

Let's hear it Project Peopllllllllllllllllllllle!!!! Whoop There It Is! (Love that song!)

  • http://mamaswaistingaway.blogspot.com/ Amy

This is going to take a lot of thought, but I'm totally up for the challenge!

  • FiddlersBride

LOVE Lost! I am hoping my own Monday Project will not have me as confused as all the time change stuff from last season though! Whoop There it Is! I must down load that on my iPod tomorrow — great stuff to walk and run to! Thanks for the reminder!

  • http://jinksee.blogspot.com/ Stephanie

Ohhhh this is going to be fun!! Let's see.. (sharpening pencils, gathering paper, getting cozy, and here we go!) Thanks for the challenge! :D

  • TheaDramaMama

Nothing like a little light time traveling to get me back into the swing of things after vacay!

  • FiddlersBride

Thanks, Christy! What is your email address?
