Thursday Three- I Wish I Had Known That

[ 6 ] 04/08/2010 |

Do you ever wish that you could go back in time and change your actions or behaviors, or lack thereof?  Do you ever think- if I had only known that when I began xxyyzz, then I would be in a much better place/would have made better decisions/wouldn’t feel lik crap now?

This Thursday Three is the “I Wish I Had Known That” edition.

Here are my three, as it relates to exercise/fitness, and more specifically, running (or in my case, NOT running.  You can read about my injury and how I feel about that over here.)

1.  Stretching is important and not for sissies….that yes, my 37, almost 38 (May birthday in da’ house!), year old body is not a spring chic any more what that’s you say? I don’t have the body of a 20 year old and never did? and I really should not ignore stretching at all.  Ignoring to stretch can and does lead to injury.  And did you know that there are many different types of stretching?  Static or dynamic, anyone? Did you also know that it’s possible to over-stretch and injure yourself that way as well?

2.  That learning about your sport or mode of exercise prior to actually doing it can result in less injury or no injury.  Who knew?  I guess I should pay attention to my coach when he sends me information about things like…..oh, ummm, maybe…..stretching?  Nutrition?  Recovery?  Avoiding injuries?

3.  That your body is a temple and needs to be treated as such.  That pushing it harder, faster, longer is NOT always the best policy, especially when NEW to a sport.  Rest and recovery and nutrition are JUST AS IMPORTANT IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT than the actual exercise itself.

Hindsight is 20/20, isn’t it my vision sucks, I need new glasses?

Team Shrinking Jeans is now entering new territory, doing 8-10 miles on our weekend long runs, running twice more during the week.  Quite a few of us have encountered various injuries of one sort or another – GAH.

We are taking one for the Team, for all of the Sisterhood, so that you can learn from us.  We are getting injured for you : )- HA!

Is there anything you had wish you had known before starting down your fitness journey, whether it be shredding, doing the Wii or EA Sports Active, going to the gym, eating right/better, etc?  Please share with us- I would love to know what’s going on in your head!

About lisa: I'm a runner, duathlete and future triathlete. I love to cook, drink margaritas, socialize with friends, and I laugh with my entire body. I'm the mother of three kids (ages 8, 6 and 3.5), I turn 40 years old in 2012, and I'm trying to find a peaceful acceptance with my body. I am slowly coming into my own, finding a true passion with empowering and motivating women to conquer their fear of the unknown when taking up running for the first time. View author profile.

I wish I would have listened to my body too. I am a long-distance walker, and two years ago I hurt my foot after a 15 mile walk. I thought at first it was just a bruise from over use. But, it didn't get better. And I took forever to go to the doctor. Turns out, weeks later, I had a stress fracture. I almost missed my big event because the healing time was so long. I think it's key to go to a doctor as soon as something seems off.

    1. how difficult it would be to relose those 4 pounds i gained over Christmas.
    2. how much better i'd feel when i started feeding my real food instead of crap. (before i shelled out $$$ on my prepackaged stockpile)

and under “i wish my mother would have known”

    3. that i needed swim lessons. real swim lessons not how to propel yourself in the water. i needed to learn bilateral breathing. i needed to learn to bend my arm as i brought it forward. because being an almost 30 year old just learning these things is embarrassing.

    Hmmm.
I wish I would have known that pricey workout gear is actually worth the $$. Cause most of the cheap stuff? Falls apart or off your butt when you're running. And now I have a drawer full of workout gear that is too obnoxious to wear.
    Also?
I wish I would have known that I'm in the 0.01% of women who DOES NOT lose weight while breastfeeding.
