Mailbag Monday | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans LLC

Happy Monday, all of you wonderful people!  How is everyone this fine June morning? Last week we added a few new additions to our post line-up with Monday being dedicated to your questions.  Thank you to everyone who asked questions, and I PROMISE, we’ll get to as many of them as possible, but since a lot of the girls are off in San Diego doing their half marathon thang, and thought for now, I’d take care of the most asked question from last week.

How did the Sisterhood begin and how we each became contributors?

I’ll answer this question from my point of view, and then the other girls can chime in from their point of view and/or correct or add things that I may/will miss.

Early January 2009, I was sitting down to the premiere of the latest season of The Biggest Loser.  I decided to live search “biggest loser” on twitter during the show.  Not long into the show, I noticed this one tweet that said she was watching the show for the first time and that she was inspired already.  (Or something like that.)  Intrigued, I clicked on the profile that said “shrinkingjeans”  and saw that there was a link to a blog called The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans.  Interesting, I thought.  So, I went back to twitter and clicked “follow”.  Just a minute or so later, whomever it was behind @shrinkingjeans, followed me back.  She and I tweeted back and forth a few times, and that was that.

The next day during break at work, I devoured over the site.  The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans began with Beth, Christy, Crooked Eyebrow, Melissa and Brian, who all decided to document their weight loss journeys, and they were inviting you to come along.  To join them on their adventure.  They wanted all of us to work on living healthier lives together because we all know that support in this journey is key. So, in November of 2008, they launched The Sisterhood, and a sweet little gem was born.

I was most impressed that there were four every day women, like myself, and one guy blogging about their weight loss experiences.  I had lost 50+ lbs myself, and thought that a weight loss blog was just an excellent idea.  So, I emailed the girls and told them so.

Within minutes, Christy, Melissa, and Crooked Eyebrow had emailed me back.  Then Christy and I chatted the whole rest of the day.  By the end of the week, Christy had convinced me to restart my blog and join in their latest weight loss challenge.  And I was hooked.

Not long after I joined, Lisa became a full time contributor.  Christy and Lisa had been BFFs for quite some time, and well, it just made sense.

In March 2009, Christy asked me if I would become a part time contributor.  I would rotate posting every other Thursday with Thea, who had been with the Sisterhood from the beginning.  (That’s right, isn’t it?) I was honored and excited and NERVOUS to write for the Sisterhood, but I guess it turned out just fine!

In June 2009, I became a full time contributor with my own blog and everything.  Then in August 2009, Christie O., Heather, and Thea all became full time contributors.  (Christie and Heather both had been with us since March 2009 .)

My journey here would not be complete without every single one of these people in my life.  To just quickly answer another question, we brainstorm a lot through MASSIVE EMAIL THREADS.  The first one I was a part of was insane.  I dreamed of email chats for days after. But I loved it.  We all just sort of click.  We laugh, we cry, we brainstorm, we rant and we love every single one of you!  Without YOU, we have no Sisterhood.

In the past year and a half, we’ve seen people come and go and come back again.  We know that sometimes life just happens and sometimes you just need a break, but know that our door is always open.  We’re here for the ups and the downs, and the goods and the bads.  The important thing in this weight loss journey is that you are making the choice to live healthier lives, and while it’s frustrating when the scales are mean to us, I promise you, if you make the choice, and make tiny changes, the scales will go down.  And remember.  We’re all in this together.

And if you’re new here or have been lurking for a while…well, what are you waiting for? 😉
