Ready, Aim, Fire (Giveaway)

[ 7 ] 08/19/2010 |

As you all know I’m a little new to the whole culture of Shrinking Jeans. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely excited to be here, but my body’s still adjusting to the estrogen levels.

That slight level of discomfort reminds me of when I first started on my weight loss journey 13 months ago. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Before I talked to some really smart people about what I wanted to accomplish, I thought that weight loss basically consisted of endless cardio and eating grass 24/7. The fidgety sheep diet as I like to call it.

Ready

Before I could even think about changing my diet and starting an exercise program, I had to be right in my head (to some extent anyway. Shut up Christy). Anyway, I needed motivation to lose weight and I needed a resolve to keep it up for a long time (I had 3 chins and 4 asses). My family was obviously an awesome motivator but I had 28 years of food related junk up inside my dome. IdealShape provided me with an awesome tool that helped prepare me mentally. It was a CD series that tapped into my subconscious and helped me clean out all that garbage. I still listen to it every day. In fact, if you’re interested, you can get a copy yourself for free (you pay 2 bucks shipping.  They’re also including weight loss shakes AND a blender bottle for FREE. A total steal). I haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else. If nothing else click the link and watch the video, I think you’ll really dig it. (Retail value of the package is 40 bucks!!!)

Aim

After I got my head straightened out (I said shut up Christy) I knew I had to set some goals for myself. I was never the guy who said “I have to lose this many pounds by this day,” but I wanted to set short term attainable goals for myself. Things like exercising 6 days this week and planning out my menus for the entire week were things that I knew I could do. I knew that if I took a one day at a time approach I wouldn’t overwhelm myself. Besides, one day turns into two, and then three, and then six. Building momentum was an important part of the entire process for me. I still set goals for myself today. The scope is a little different but I still set goals. They keep me focused and on track.

Fire

The last step was to take what I had learned and planned and put it into action. I had to get my ass in gear. I put one foot in front of the other and was literally doing exercises like squats against the wall. I could only squat my own body weight like 6 times, and that was using the wall as a crutch! If you’re in the same boat don’t get frustrated. It’s a year later and I can squat a lot more than my body weight a lot more times. You can too.

Remember that you’ll never hit your target if you don’t pull the trigger!

Great post, Ryan! Tell me, which one of your asses did you get in gear? :)

I'm pretty good at the learning and planning; it's the putting into action part that I seem to slip up on. I'm finally doing it, though, with my half marathon training. It hasn't been perfect, and I've missed a day here or there, but I'm committed and seeing it through.

    Thanks for the tips!

Love it!!!! So, how many asses do you have left now?! I'm going to take that “Ready, Aim, Fire” attitude to the gym this morning.

Why do you keep telling me to shut up? :P

    LOVE Karena's comment. So much!

Great post. We're pretty glad to have you around here, pimp!

It doesn't seem like it ever gets to a level of perfect. Your commitment is the part that's going to push you through. Congrats on the 13.1!

This is a great reminder that you can't reach your goal if you don't start. I finally ordered and received my Road ID and on the last line I put “no start – no finish”. And one step does lead to two and three, etc. And sometimes the first step is the hardest, but also the most important.

Great post, Pimp! I've wasted so much of my adult life waiting for the moment to be “right” for weight loss. Thankfully, I think I'm finally starting to figure out that it's just a decision to be made and acted upon. Part of that action for me is definitely setting small/short-term goals for myself. It not only helps keep me motivated, but also gives me little successes to celebrate along the way rather than waiting until I reach my ultimate goal. Off to check out the link. :)
