When I was in the sixth grade, my class had a student teacher, Mrs. Duncan. Also, in the sixth grade, I went through an extremely rough time with some friends and all of a sudden, I was left with no friends.

Mrs. Duncan knew how sad I was and being the very kind person that she was, she befriended me. It just so happened that she lived down the street from me. She would let me ride my bike to her house, and we would sit and talk for hours. She liked to sketch, too and she took the time to talk with me about one of my favorite things. Art. She also introduced me to a new friend. (A new girl in our class.) And she gave great hugs. I’m certain that without Mrs. Duncan, I would not have made it through the sixth grade.

I’ve spent the better part of ten years searching for Mrs. Duncan. The reason I want to find her is so that I can thank her. I want to thank the woman who, at 20-something years old, befriended a twelve year old girl and gave that girl something to smile about.

I’m not sending out a plea to find Mrs. Duncan here. (Although, if any of you know a Mrs. Mary Duncan who was a student teacher at Glen Cove Elementary School in Roanoke, VA in 1990, please send her my way.) I’m sharing my story with you to say never underestimate that power that YOU have. I’m quite certain that Mrs. Duncan had no idea the impact she had on my life.

I had no idea just how many lives I could touch by writing about my weight loss journey. I felt like if my words could help just one person to become healthy, then writing about it was completely worth it. And I still feel that way. If for some reason, the world of blogging were to come crashing down, I could look back upon this experience and say, “It was awesome.”

It’s kind of like sending out a smile. Do you know what I’m talking about? Someone you know could be having the crappiest day ever, and you don’t even know it. But something within you tells you to send that person an email, just to say hi. It’s very likely that you made that person’s day. Just by saying hi.

Changing your life to become more fit and healthy is the exact same thing. (Stick with me here.) What IF you decide to become a healthier YOU. Someone sees the changes in you, and decides, “If he/she can do that, then why can’t I? I can!” And KAPOW! All of a sudden, you’ve inspired someone. It really is an awesome feeling, that power of you.

Our latest challenge is all about the Power of ONE. The power of you. It all starts with you. You have the power to make healthier changes within YOU, about YOU and for YOU, and who knows what lives you could touch just by looking within yourself and doing something for you.

I admit, I need to work on it, too. And work on it I will.
