10 Must-Have Songs for Your Summer Running Playlist

Summer is upon us {finally} and you are probably looking to update your iPod with some fresh music. Many of us are knee-deep training for races, and others are just starting out. Whether you are taking your first shot at the Couch-to-5K program or a seasoned runner, these songs are sure to get your heart pumpin’.

1. Halo. The original is by Beyonce, but Mysto and Pizzi do one heck of a remix. Guaranteed to get those feet going.

2. I Know What I Am by Band of Skulls. Know what you are? Badass! I Know What I Am - Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

3. Black and Yellow by Wiz Khalifa. Bari and Christie were talking about this song the other week and I had no clue what it was. I finally heard it and immediately added it to my running playlist. It doesn’t hurt that black and yellow are the colors of charity: water and I happen to be running and fundraising for a clean water well. Black and Yellow - Rolling Papers (Deluxe Version)

4. Bust A Move by Young MC. You probably have this on your iPod already, right? Don’t blame me if you feel the need to show off your sweet moves mid-stride. Bust a Move - Stone Cold Rhymin'

5. C’mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise) by Tiësto vs. Diplo {feat. Busta Rhymes}. Don’t let the long, crazy name fool you. Want to run faster? Listen to this song. C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise) [feat. Busta Rhymes] - C'mon (Catch 'Em By Surprise) [feat. Busta Rhymes] - EP

6. Just Can’t Get Enough by The Black Eyed Peas. Your goal? One foot in front of the other. You got it. And then some. Just Can't Get Enough - The Beginning (Deluxe Version)

7. You’re Gonna Go Far Kid by The Offspring. You will go far, too. Trust me. You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - You're Gonna Go Far, Kid - Single

8. I Just Wanna Run by The Downtown Fiction. Run, baby, RUN! I Just Wanna Run - Best I Never Had - EP

9. Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons. Hear me RAWR. Little Lion Man - Sigh No More

10. Savior by Rise Against. When you think you’ve hit your wall, this song will be your saving grace. Savior - Appeal to Reason

There you have it… 10 songs that keep me going when I pound the pavement. What’s rocking your playlist?

I tend to like rather angry songs when  I run.  Kick A$$ by Mika always gets me going as does Make Me Wanna Die by The Mighty Reckless.  Forget You by Ceelo and Thank You Very Much by Lilly Allen  also keep me going.  I also go old school with September Rain by Guns n Roses.  (If you see me using my arms like a symphony conductor on the trail, I am probably singing along to the last one!)

Responding to myself to say that the Mika song has VERY inspiring lyrics for me “We are young, we are strong, we’re not looking for where we belong.  We’re not cool, we are free and we’re running with blood on our knees”  I crossed the finish line of my first 5K with that in my ears.

Music is such a personal choice isn’t it?!  I love trying to find new songs to run to, though.  I am more of a wiggity-wiggity, dance, hip hop, club kind of music listening/running fool.  I really like Right Round by Flo Rida, OMG by Will.I.Am, Rolling in the Deep by Adele, and On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez (great, fast beat!).
