Healthy Portable Snacks

[ 2 ] 07/07/2011 |

I had grand plans to write this great post in regards to Try It Thursday.  You see, today is Thursday and normally on Thursdays we post about *trying* new things.  I was going to write about trying a *tri* (tri= triathlon).   However, I haven’t *tri’d* yet nor have I even registered for a triathlon.  It was ont he radar to do tonight but you know, life and husband and kids and vacation packing majorlygot in my *tri* way.

I hate when that happens all of the time.

But this post will be great and you will love it.  Promise. Maybe learn something new and maybe share something new with all of us.

As you can tell from the title and not my long, rambling, long-winded intro, I want to share with you some awesome, healthy, portable snacks for the Summer…..heck, for anytime.  Since school has been out, we have been on the move, in the car, going to the pool, meeting up friends, going to the beach and very soon here, will be loading up the car for our grand family vacation all of 1 hr from where we live.

We get hungry.  The kids get hungry, often.  I don’t want them snacking on junk all day long.  In fact, I don’t want to be snacking on junk all day long.  So I thought- I am going to share what’s been working for us and Christy’s family, too in hopes that you’ll find something new to *try* I am so good, lol.

Here are mine (in no particular order):

  • string cheese
  • Sabra hummus with carrots or pretzels
  • homemade snack-mix (love this one- you can totally tailor it to your preferences!)
  • veggie tray with light or fat-free sour cream dip (this was my favorite snack at the beach last week)
  • cut up fruit
  • peanut butter/flatout bread with pb and bananas/apples with pb/pb with honey & bananas…..you get the drift
  • Popchips- we love Popchips in our house
  • corn tortilla w/ melted cheese, bean & cheese tacos
  • pickles!

Now that I have shared, would you please return the favor and let me know YOUR your favorite snacks for the road, at home, on vacation, etc?  I need some new, fresh ideas!

Don’t worry, you’ll get to the tri! Overcoming obstacles is always part of achieving something! :)

Some of my favorite snacks are (sized to be about either 100-200 calories)
    *Handful of walnuts
*Nutrition shake made with either water or vanilla soy milk in shaker cup
*Whole fruits (saves time, already “packaged” also)
*Baby carrots grabbed by the fist from the bag and put into a smaller ziploc bag
    *Three fig Newtons
    *Clif Builders bars
    *Two home-made whole-wheat buttermilk scones
    *Two brown rice cakes

Since the “whole fruits” category has so many individual items in it, I’m still enjoying my list!

my favorite on the go snacks are fruit!
I’m also eating more protein bars but since they are chocolate covered they don’t work too well on the road unless you eat them right away.
I do like the Cliff bars and they aren’t chocolate so they survive the car ride!

Hope you have a great vacation!!
