Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans Run The 'Hood

Starting from Scratch:: Couch-to-5K

[ 27 ] 08/22/2011 |

You have probably heard that we are putting on a race in October– Run the ‘Hood Virtual 5K/10K & Kids’ Run. It’s for anyone, really, walkers/runners/woggers… any age, any ability. I’ve now finished 3 half-marathons and several smaller races, but I’ve never had a race where I am able to consistently run {slow jog?} for more than a few minutes at a time before switching to a brisk walk. I have never gotten the “runner’s high” that I have had so many friends rave about. I don’t care about being fast and with any race I do, my goal is simply to finish and not be last.

I would, however, like to be able to claim that I can run for longer than a mile at a time. Enter the Couch-to-5K program… The program boasts that anyone can go from a couch potato to consistently running 3 miles in just two months. Thirty minutes a day, 3 days a week, for 9 weeks. It almost sounds too good to be true, but guess what? It works! I have heard so many success stories from my fellow “non-runner to runner” friends and have been amazed at their progress each time. Read about Erin and Megan!

You can find the printable Couch-to-5K plan at Cool Running. I purchased this app for $1.99 to use instead and it’s awesome! Couch-to-5K - The Active Network, Inc. You can use your own music, and a little voice will speak to you at the appropriate intervals to tell you to jog or walk. The program also uses GPS {if you choose} to monitor the distance you travel. When you are done with your workout, one push of a button and voila! you can share your accomplishment with your Facebook friends!

I know that several people signed up for the Run the ‘Hood 5K are planning on following this program and decided that I will finally take the plunge and follow this program from start to finish. You all know that I get bored easily and like to quit things halfway through, so I am COUNTING on you to keep me going, k? I will do the same for you, promise! I created a nice little place for us to go and share our triumphs and whines:

Couch-to-5K group on the ‘hood!

Yesterday was Week 1, Day 1 for me. I pretty much thought of every excuse of why I SHOULD NOT do this workout. It was way too hot, I was grumpy, I’m too fat for my workout clothes… Finally, I told myself to shut up and at 4 o’clock p.m., I laced up my shoes and got my butt out of that door. It was hot, yes, and I felt disgusting for not having exercised for so long, but I DID NOT DIE. I did each and every interval the workout called for. It was not pretty, but I finished. 2.07 miles! You can follow all my C25K workouts on DailyMile!

So, who’s with me on this Couch-to-5K adventure? Leave a comment below telling us who you are, if/where you blog and twitter handle if you tweet, and how you feel so far! Look for weekly updates and check-ins each and every Monday until the big race on October 22nd! I’m @lissajoy on Twitter, and I will be writing here on Mondays and on my personal blog throughout this journey!

Are you new to running completely? This “getting started running” guide will be your new best friend.

Have you signed up for the race yet? If not, we’ve got a swag and a finisher’s medal awaiting you!

Disclosure: I bought the Couch-to-5K app with my own money. If you click the button provided above, you will be able to purchase the app through our affiliate program, and we will make approximately $0.06 for every purchase, which might earn us enough for a pack of gum in a few years.

I started the program on Saturday.  Tomorrow I plan on doing W1D2 (at 5:30 in the frickin morning).  So far I feel pretty good.  Had to deal with shin and arch pain so that sucked but it is slowly starting to feel better and tomorrow I will just go a bit slower and pay attention to my form.  I’m sure my weight, form and shoes are all playing a part.  Not to mention the fact that I’m a newbie.

oh yeah and here’s my infos:

I know my weight is a HUGE factor. Last winter, when I was 20 lbs lighter, it was so much easier. Blech.

I’m with you! Today was week one, day one for me on C25K. It actually went much better than I’d expected. Although I, too, approach this (and any) event with a “I just want to finish” philosophy, I’d really like to be able to run this whole 5k. That would be the farthest I have EVER run. Farthest by, oh, say, about 2.6 miles :)

      Thanks, girl!

I restarted C25K to build some speed.  I do have to train on a treadmill right now because of the unbearable heat here, but will get outside later in the month.  I can’t wait for that.  Right now my goal is to just finish, but I am going to try to jog the whole thing.  I also signed up for a second 5k in December!

By the time October comes, I will be battling the frigid temps. ;p

Awesome that you signed up for another 5K!

  • Nancy

My plan is to start tomorrow and make Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday my run days.  My goal is like Lissa’s.  I want to be able to say I ran an entire 5k.  I have walked two half marathons and walked or wogged more 5k’s than I can count, but I have never ever run one enter 5k.  I’m hoping that all changes on October 22.  Wait…make that this all changes on October 22.  I can do this and I will.  You can find me here at the Sisterhood blog and also at my personal blog

I’ve decided not to pick days for my runs, because I will just set myself up to fail. I will plan them on a weekly basis because my schedule is going to be oh-so-crazy!!! Ack!

Go Nancy, go!! You can do it!

  • http://plainolegrandmaislosingit.wordpress.com/ Adah

I did Week 1 day 1 this morning. Even though I actually completed the this training right before the January virtual 5k here I started over at the very beginning and boy was I glad I did. Those 60 second wogs were not easy!

I will be starting tonight. This will be my 1st attempt at any running in 5 weeks. I tore a hip muscle. If I can’t complete it, then I will walk it, but I will do it!

You go, girl! Sooooo proud of you for doing this! You can do it, I know you can!

  • Lisa

First off, I am SO proud of you for doing this.  You go girl!

Secondly, you already know that I run, but with consistent walk breaks.  It’s worked for me and even with walk breaks, my pace is 11-12 min miles.  I wonder though, if I did the C25K program (or even C210K), if my pace would get faster over time.  I bet it would.  I’m kind of in between training programs until I pick my next race (outside of this one).

    • http://www.whereverimaywander.com Lissa_ShrinkingJeans

      I bet it would, too!

  • Mary P.

I need to do this! I started C25K last fall and made it to Week 5 and then flaked out. Kept blaming it on winter but we all know there is one person (and not one season!) who is responsible for my not finishing the program and that my dear friends is me! Yes, I have been doing one 5k a month for 2011, BUT I have not been training for those races at all and still have not been able to do one without walk breaks, which is my goal. Maybe the universe is telling me to give it another go.
