Free Friday: TV is Educational. Really. | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans LLC

As a stay at home mom, I try REALLY hard not to watch tv during the day. It’s not good for me, and it’s not good for my kiddos.

But a few weeks ago, I saw an ad for a new show on ABC, The Chew. It’s a talk show hosted by some of my all time faves: Mario Batali, Iron Chef Michael Symon, Carla from Top Chef (hootie-hoo!), Clinton Kelley from What Not to Wear and Dr. Oz’s daughter, Daphne Oz.

Yes, I’m a total Food Network/TLC/Bravo addict. Shush.

The Chew went on the air on Monday, and I have dvr’d it and watched it every day since.

It’s a talk show about food, yo. Me likey.

The thing I love about it? The focus on using food as a tool to bring the family together, to nourish body and soul. Also? Every recipe is broken down into cost per serving, which is fantastic with budgets weighing heavily on many minds.

My very favorite thing, so far, is Daphne Oz’s health tips. I’ve actually taken some of her ideas and incorporated them into my diet. One of those things is psyllium husks. You may also know psyllium as Metamucil.

Yes, fiber. It’s a good thing. I picked up a tub of psyllium powder at Trader Joe’s this morning. And I mixed a heaping spoonful into my yogurt this afternoon. The texture…is interesting. Kind of crunchy. I liked it. I’m planning on making a smoothie tomorrow and adding the psyllium.

I’m actually kind of excited. About a smoothie. Exciting life I lead, no?

I guess the moral of this post is that you CAN learn something from television.

Are you watching anything new? It can be health related…or not. Honestly, I love hearing about new shows.

So fess up…what’s your guilty (or not so guilty) pleasure?
