This week is going to be a little crazy for me.

My brother is visiting for a few days and then we (my brother, the kids and I) are packing up the car and driving to Ohio. It’s only a 7 hour drive so it shouldn’t be too bad, but it begs the age old question:

How do I manage to exercise when I’m on vacation/business trip/travel-ness.

Here are a few tips that work for me:

  1. Make a plan – Just like every aspect of our lives, when we have a plan in place, it’s much easier to get things done. Decide what you want to do while you’re gone and write it down. Be as specific as possible to make it easier to follow. “Run for 3 days for at least 30 minutes” is much better than “Run”.
  2. Tell people about it – If you’re traveling with someone, let them know your intentions. Put it out on Twitter, Facebook, your blog (check out what I plan to do this week while I’m gone)…whatever you need to do. The more people you tell, the more face you’ll want to save.  : )
  3. Use your hotel – If you’re staying at a hotel, check out what fitness equipment they offer. Some hotels even have maps to local running routes. All you have to do is ask the front desk.
  4. Check out local gyms – We belong to our local Y, so whenever we travel the first thing I do is check to see if there’s a Y close to where we are going. Most gyms have policies that allow members to use their memberships to get in to other locations. If you don’t belong to a gym, check to see if a local gym has a day pass or guest pass.
  5. Be flexible – Remember that you’re on vacation and don’t beat yourself up too much if part of your plan doesn’t work out. You can only control so much. If you planned on a swim but can’t find a pool, walk instead. If you don’t have access to free weights, do some body weight exercises. If getting to a gym is out of the question, take a walk around the block. You always have options.
