Meet our next featured runner- Lisa B. She lives in New Hampshire, where I bet the weather is much nicer for running than it is here where I live. Make sure to give Lisa a shout-out in the comments below- do you have something in common with her, does something she writes resonate with you, or something entirely different?

Lisa B. – New Hampshire

It’s been a while but the last long distance I remember doing (non-race) was about eight miles, a very hilly eight miles. 🙂

I started running when my marriage was falling apart, as a way to combat depression. After my first 5K, the running group I had trained with immediately wanted me to step up to training for 1/2 and full marathons. I chose the triathlon track instead, but continued to run 5Ks periodically.

Over the years, I have gotten away from and gone back to running many times. I think I keep coming back to it because there is a feeling of confidence and strength that a good run can give you, that nothing else can.

My most proud running moment was when I ran up over a long grueling hill (Corrigan Hill) for the first time. I had such a block and the first time I got up and over, I cried.

Runner’s high? Hmm, well proud race moments but not really a runner’s high. I remember the very first year that I ran, we ran when it was hot and we ran when it was freezing cold. We were crazy!

When I started cross-training, my BFF running partner was my friend Carol. She was larger than life to me – faster, stronger, tougher. And she pushed me, which I appreciate to this day. I fall back on a lot of the knowledge that she gave me, and the advice.

Right now, my favorite piece of running gear are my new sneakers: black, hot pink, and lime green! I can’t wait to recover from being sick and be able to lace those babies up!

I’ve used the couch to 5k app mostly – I feel like a newbie again, because I’ve had so many setbacks, particularly this last year. I’m looking forward to getting to the point where I don’t need it to coach me anymore! (which I probably don’t now but….it’s a nice safety til I get my confidence back.)

Piece of advice? If you really want to run, make time to do it. And don’t give up – you can start over as many times as you need to. And don’t let people tell you that you’re just a jogger, not a “real” runner. A 14 minute mile or a 7 minute mile is still a mile, and you’re still lapping everyone on the couch.
