Summer Bucket List 2013 – grown up edition | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans LLC

Happy first day of summer my friends! When we were kids, summer started as soon as that final school bell rang and the sense of freedom washed over us like a tidal wave. Pure joy. Pure abandon. It  meant waking up early and heading outside to play until dinner time, then more outdoor games as soon as dinner was over. We were outside all the time.  There was always a sense of excitement, as there is with any new season.

As a grown up, summer may mean a vacation if you are lucky enough. But depending on your job, you may be required to work your tail off ahead of time just to clear the decks so you can actually enjoy said vacation. Summer can make adults grumpy. We want the freedom and carefree attitude of what we think the season should be all about.

You probably have seen the idea of a Summer Bucket List all over your travels on the interwebs and social media. Some families make very creative and elaborate DIY canvases or posters  listing all the things they want set out to do in the next few months. I have seen the ideas written on clothespins strung across wires or strings or fancy ribbon, or written on colorful pieces of scrapbook paper and tossed into a jar. Each day a hand dips in and plucks one out for an “adventure” of some sort. Well, why should kids have all the fun? Who’s to say as adults we can’t have a bucket list of our own? And even have it include items related  to health and fitness and wellness?

Here are a few ideas you may want to add to YOUR bucket list this summer:

  • Visit a state park
  • Try one new class at the gym
  • Outdoor yoga
  • Make your own ice cream
  • Hula hoop for 30 minutes
  • Spend 15 minutes alone. Daily.
  • Visit a local or regional park
  • Borrow exercise DVDs from your local library
  • Visit a farmers market
  • Ask a farmer what his or her favorite recipe is using a particular item of produce.
  • Learn how to compost
  • Take a walking tour in a nearby city
  • Take your measurements. Write them down. Take them again on the first day of fall.
  • Join a rec league through your county parks and rec department.
  • Teach someone a new skill.
  • Complete 100 burpees (if I pick this one, I am putting it back in the jar!).
  • Spend a weekend offline
  • Enter a fun run with friends.
  • Celebrate after the finish.
  • Invite a neighbor for a walk.
  • Hike a new trail.
  • Rent a bicycle built for two.
  • Climb the bleachers at the high school stadium.
  • Hide the remote.

OK gang, I’m in. Who else wants to join me in doing a Summer Bucket List? What activities do you have in mind?

Please share your ideas in the comments and most importantly, have a GREAT summer!
