10 Things to Do to Keep Your Kids Active This Summer

Active Kids

I’m Bored!  Hearing those words whined from my children are like fingernails squeaking down a chalkboard.  It is so easy to give in to their demands for more screen time or electronics when you feel like you have nothing else to do.  Of course, there are always things to do and I am here to share with you a few of them.

  1. Outdoor scavenger hunt.  Give them a list of things to find and send them on their merry way.  They can either do on their own or as a group.
  2. Talent show.  My kids’ imagination know no limit when given license to show off their talents- they always blow me away with their wit and creativity.  Also, they are competitive, especially when competing against mom and dad.
  3. Dance party.  Turn the music up and get dancing.  My kids love to shake their moneymaker and they really love it when mom and dad get out there and dance with them. At some point, we will have a dance-off to see who has the best dance moves : ).  Another version of this is to play Freeze Dance- kids dance while the music plays but have to stop when the music stops.
  4. Early morning hike.  Get out on a local trail before it gets too hot!
  5. Night flash light hike. Give the kids flash lights and do a hike around your neighborhood at dusk or early evening.  It’s always neat to see what you see when the sun goes down.  Be safe though and stay together.
  6. Geo-caching.  I have not done this one personally but I know of several people who do this with their kids and very much enjoy it.
  7. Have a whipped cream/shaving cream fight- my kids LOVE this one!
  8. Go bowling
  9. Exercise WITH them.  Now, I know that my best workouts occur when I am alone BUT kids like to do what you do.  You show excitement, they will show excitement (maybe- ha!).  You pretend to be the instructor and put them through the paces.
  10. Take pictures around town.  Give your kids disposable cameras and go around town, taking pictures of their favorite spots, restaurants, things to do or places and things they want to do.  Look for funky art, sculptures, museums, murals and the like.  Have them get in the picture and jump/act silly/get creative with their movement.  Print their pictures and have them make a mini-scrapbook.

Great ideas, Lisa. We have been to a few museums recently that have things for the kids to do! Children’s museums, science museums and rock climbing places are a great way to keep their body and mind active! And extra bonus: they leave tired and sometimes they actually want to read to learn more about what they discovered while at the museum! :-)
