The human brain is 95% water. Blood is 82% water. And the average human body is at least 60% water. Water is the single most important substance for sustaining life and promoting optimal health. Yet the average person drinks a mere 20 ounces of water per day. How much water should you be drinking?

When we starve our bodies of water, they start to complain (think headaches, fatigue, and hunger) rebel, and begin a series of adverse reactions. Dehydration leads to mild symptoms of irritability and food cravings to severe imbalances such as low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and delirium.

To further illuminate the importance of water for the human body, here are the 12 reasons to hydrate for health:

  • Promotes healthy digestion
  • Keeps the kidney’s healthy
  • Proper cell, tissue, and organ function
  • Prevents constipation
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells
  • Critical to brain, heart, lung, and muscle function
  • Improves and maintains healthy skin cells
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Increases energy
  • Reduces risk of disease

How Much Water?

A good rule of thumb is to consume at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day. So if you’re a 140 pound woman, you should be drinking at least 70 ounces of water per day.

If you have trouble drinking the recommended amount of water on a daily basis, plan in advance to have water around you. Travel with a water bottle everywhere you go, the same way you do your phone. Keep it handy and sip from it frequently.

If plain ol’ water is too boring for you, add fresh lemon, lime, orange, or strawberries to filtered water, which is a great way to add flavor without resorting to soda, coffee, or other highly sweetened beverages.

The importance of starting the day with water is highlighted in Eat Clean Health’s Group 7 Day Summer Detox, which encourages clients to begin every day with a Detox Morning Lemon Elixir. Starting the day with warm water, lemon, and a dash of cinnamon is a wonderful way to warm up the digestive system, remove toxins from the liver, and hydrate the body from the moment you wake up.
