As I type this post I am cozy and warm in my apartment as the weather outside turns into a Winter Wonderland. Wednesday morning I went for a 3 mile walk in short sleeves and capris. Later, we were at the park playing, having a craft sale and most of the kids were wearing shorts and t-shirts. Today, it is bitter cold (for Dallas, TX) and sleeting/raining.

I know some of you like Melissa, Bari, and my Canadian friends are laughing now at my 19* wind chill but remember this is TEXAS and I’m not cut out of that kind of cold weather cloth anymore!!  I don’t know about the rest of y’all but this kind of weather is CRAZY difficult to plan for my workouts! So what’s a girl to do to get a work out in when it’s icy and the city of Dallas is shut down?

I know some of you are so hard core that you will still be running out in snow and ice but once it gets below 35* I’m pretty much an inside kind of girl, unless it’s to do something really cool like go get into the already warmed up car and drive to a similarly cool place like a friend’s house or maybe even my hairdresser’s salon!

As for working out, I love to use my videos (do people say videos anymore?) /DVD’s and my Wii/XBox 360 for my workouts.  But, sometimes that gets a little boring if you are doing the same ones over and over. Not to mention the body will get used to doing the same workout and stop responding. So in order to enjoy a little more of this winter wonderland I decided to look for some new workouts to do while stuck inside this weekend. (Yes, it looks like this will be over this weekend, at least over enough that I can get out again)! I know, I know….I’m a wimp!!

I enlisted the help of my karate loving, ALMOST 10 year old!!! How can he be almost 10??? I asked him what kinds of workout he likes to do inside on a cold winter day. His answers were….

  • Jumping rope
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Sit ups
  • Push ups
  • Yoga
  • Planks
  • Shadow boxing
  • Jogging in place
  • High knees

All of these will cause me to break a sweat (and I’m guessing you, too)! Therefore, they will help us in our journey to be more healthy and fit to end this year.

I also love to do workouts with my Wii and Xbox 360. I have the EA Sports Active,  Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum, Just Dance4, and WiiFit for the Wii. I also have the Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout for the Xbox 360 that will cause me to sweat. Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred Dvd is probably my all time favorite love to hate workout. That Dvd will cause me to sweat just by watching it (but I get much more of a workout by actually doing the workout)!! There are thousands of YouTube Videos available to use to complete a workout as well! I started doing workouts this fall with Tamara from FitKnitChick for her 40+Fitness Program and learned that she has so many great workouts on her website. She has some great core and ab workouts and based on my experience with doing her workouts this fall they are going to help make a difference in my core and abs. This workout and this workout by FitKnitChick will definitely work my abs in the comfort of my own living room while winter is creating a wonderland or a nightmare depending on how you look at it! My stomach is the biggest area of frustration right now other than my lack of self-control so I decided I definitely need to concentrate on it a bit more than I have over the past few months.

The best part of watching and using YouTube videos is that they cost nothing to use and you can do them whenever it is convenient for you. This goes for doing any of the exercises my son suggested, also! First thing in the morning, while the kids are asleep in the afternoon, after the kids go to bed or in 10 minute increments whenever you get a chance!! I also love doing my Wii and Xbox games for the same reasons, although in my recent experience I still have to workout first thing in the morning in order to get it done!

Regardless of the havoc Mother Nature is causing on your normal workout you still can get a great workout in, in the convenience of your living room or bedroom, with minimal equipment. Your internet connection, a few minutes and a yoga mat or soft rug and you have NO EXCUSES!! And neither do I, for that matter!!
