free workouts

You know what it’s like this time of year. The ads on TV are touting membership specials going on at the gyms in your area. You see your Facebook news feed filling up with friends boasting sharing about their visit to the gym or that they are IN the gym at that very moment “killing it.” But maybe money is tight and you cannot afford a gym right now. Or maybe you find the thought of joining a gym intimidating and it’s just not “you.”  Well, gym schmim I say. You don’t need no stinking gym (trust me, some of them REALLY stink!)

There are plenty of resources available for you to get your workouts – good, strong, effective workouts – for FREE. Here’s a list. Keep it handy for when you feel like switching things up.

  • Shrinking Bootcamp I have to start the list with our very own bootcamp here at the Sisterhood! This is a fantastic program literally at your fingertips. Many of you have been plugging along at this for a little while now. Don’t you feel awesome? You WILL see results! If you have not joined in, no worries. You can start this bootcamp any time! Do what you can when you can! Just get ‘er done!
  • FitStudio.com I just recently learned about this fabulous site and have been exploring all it has to offer, which is A LOT, including: more than 100 free workouts of all kinds imaginable, challenges, workout programs that stretch out for a few weeks, an online calendar to keep track of your workouts, and  the ability to create a list of your favorite workouts and playlists. It also syncs with your favorite apps and devices such as MyFitnessPal and FitBit, MapMyRun and RunKeeper. You can set it up so that you receive daily emails outlining the day’s workout. And as an added bonus, by completing workouts and reaching goals that are set by YOU, you can earn points toward purchases from Sears, LandsEnd or KMart. I have done several workouts on this site and am still feeling sore. I also love that the workouts are printable.
  • Your local library. This is a no brainer, people. Where else can I walk in and walk out with DVDs for Stomperobics, the old-school Buns of Steel, Yoga Booty Ballet and Jillian Michaels’ 30-Day Shred, all in one fell swoop? And all for free. This is a great way to try different workouts on for size. Variety keeps things fresh and keeps you interested.
  • FitnessBlender.com My other go-to favorite site for free workouts. You can choose workouts based on training type, body focus, level of difficult, how many minutes you have to spare or how many calories you want to torch, and create a list of favorites for easy reference down the line.
  • Pinterest Just do a search for terms like “workout routines” and you will quickly see that this addictive site has a lot more to offer than DIY projects and recipe ideas!
  • Your TV. If you have Verizon FIOS or Comcast, you have access to every kind of workout known to man in the comfort of your living room. OK – technically not free, since you are paying for cable, but there’s no additional cost associated with these so there you have it.
  • DVD Swap Club. I have yet to do this myself, but how about organizing a monthly exercise DVD swap with some friends or neighbors? Borrow some from your friends and let them borrow from you. It’s a great way to switch things up.
  • Smart phone apps. Oh I can write about these all day long. Another post for another day!
