Giving Back Feels Right | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans LLC

Here at the Sisterhood we are all about giving back because we know how it’s the right thing to do. That’s the reason this site was created in the beginning; to give back and create a network of others to give back to, in regards to what we have learned or are learning to help each of us to be healthier and to lose weight! Since it’s beginning days in the fall of 2008, we have continued to find more and more ways to give back to our world around us. It’s just the right thing to do and it feels good!

Three times a year we hold Virtual Races and we donate a part of the funds to a charity that means something to our community. This fall the Virtual Race is the weekend before Thanksgiving and will be helping our four legged friends! In the past we have donated to The Children’s Tumor Foundation, Susan G. Komen fund, charity: water, the Wounded Warrior project, and the American Heart Association. (As you can see we really want to give back to the world around us.) This fall the charity that will benefit is The Love A Bull organization that helps with teaching Responsibility, Advocacy, and Education for Pit Bulls. It’s a wonderful way to get involved in your community while participating in a fun virtual race! You can walk or run, a 5K, or 10K. You can even get medals for you and your favorite 4 legged friend!! Read all about it and sign up now!! We have a discount code you can use if you sign up before Friday, September 19th! I promise if you sign up and participate in this you will feel good!!

Human medal!

Four-legged medal!

As you can see we have some awesome medals for both the humans and the animals! It’s a great way for everyone to get some exercise right before Thanksgiving and Christmas crazy happens!!

I think one of the best things about the Sisterhood is how supportive everyone is. That trickles down for every aspect of life; from health and fitness, weight loss, to personal and private achievements. Back in the early years of the ‘hood I was struggling a lot with some personal health and fitness issues that were affecting a lot of areas of my life. The ladies here never criticized me or put me down. They were just there for me! They helped me get a grip on a lot of things that needed to change and they helped me see that I was an important part of this community. They helped me see that I was worth the effort. They helped me set some goals and change my life for the better. In early 2011 my best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. (She kicked cancer’s butt, thankyouverymuch,LORDJESUS!)  It hit me HARD!! She was the first person that I was close to beyond my family to get cancer of any type, and it was breast cancer! Breast cancer was the one cancer I had always been the most concerned about getting myself (due to family history). When she was diagnosed with stage 3-Breast Cancer I decided I NEEDED to do something more than the here and now stuff to help her. I NEEDED to do something bigger than myself! I NEEDED to be a part of the bigger picture. That’s when I decided to see what I could do that was bigger and more important to help.

That’s when I decided to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day! 60 miles of walking, in 3 days; raising a minimum of $2300!! It sounds unachievable but it really and truly is ACHIEVABLE! I’ve done it for the past 3 years and in just 67 days I will be walking my FOURTH Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure!! It is exciting, it is mind-blowing, it is life changing!! Over the course of the next 67 days I will be training during the week (4-7 mile walks twice a week), and on the weekends I will be putting in anywhere between 16 and 40 miles, depending on the training for the weekend! YES, that’s a lot of miles to walk! YES, it’s takes a lot of time and sweat and sometimes even some tears but I don’t have breast cancer and I feel so empowered that I am helping to find a cure. I am walking with a wonderful team of women (and men); some of which have had breast cancer! One lady has it RIGHT NOW and she is FIGHTING WITH ALL HER MIGHT!! I want to see her cured so I put in my miles weekly! My family and friends have helped ensure that I reached my fundraising goal and for that I am beyond blessed. Most people fear the fundraising more than anything else, but because of my wonderful support system this year that was not my fear!

One of the reasons I am talking about all of this today is to show you that YOU CAN DO IT!! Whatever IT IS, I know that you can do it!! It may not be easy, it may not come naturally, it may take all of your strength and willpower but I know what ever you set your mind to you can do it!!

Another reason, I am talking about this today is to let you know that NEXT SEPTEMBER, I will be team captain of a Susan G. Komen 3-Day team that will be walking Seattle!! (I already have one wonderful team mate, Karena O, and I’m hoping to end the year with many, many more!) We will be representing the wonderful ladies of The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans!! If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of something bigger than yourself I would LOVE to have you be part of the team!! We will be training for about 6 months, starting in March (AND YES, YOU DO NEED TO TRAIN TO WALK). You will be in charge of your own way to get yourself to Seattle and your own fundraising! I will help in whatever ways possible and I promise you will NEVER be the same again!!

Are you game? Do you want to participate in a HUGE, life-changing event? You can get more information from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day site, or feel free to email me at: ann @ shrinking jeans dot net

If you just want to help our team reach it’s fundraising goals I have quickly set up a fundraising site! I will do more with it over the next couple of days, but it’s here if you are just wanting to donate!!

xoxoxoxo,

Ann
