“Go play outside!” How many times did we hear our parents saying that as we were growing up? With the unopened gift of summer being ready to be laid out before us, I find myself thinking more and more about the need to get outside and take it all in.
Saturday, June 6 is National Trails Day, sponsored by the American Hiking Society. This is a national movement to promote the importance of trails across the country. Events will take place in every state events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. Visit www.nationaltrailsday.org to find an event near you. I already have done that. In my state of Maryland, there are a dozen or so events going on ranging from guided hikes to bike rides to a 5k trail race to lighthouse tours and guided canoe tours. I’l lucky to live only about 15 minutes from a beautiful state park but I’ve only explored a small part of it. Time to change that.
The National Trails Day also includes a photo contest.
So what do you say? You have about two weeks to get some family and friends together and head out for a hike on June 6. How about we all put down our mobile devices, say sayonora screen time and we hit the trails, as a Shrinking Jeans community? We can post and share pictures on our Facebook site. And bonus points to those Shrinkers who also pack up a healthy picnic and share pictures of that as well!
