I “Big Puffy Heart” walking and I ABSOLUTELY HATE getting blisters. But, I am one of the lucky people on the planet that has wonky feet that have a tendency for blisters! When I started training for my very first Susan G. Komen 3-Day five years ago, my first training walk was 3 miles. My next training walk the following morning was 4 miles. I did great and loved it. The next weekend called for 8 miles on Saturday and 6 miles on Sunday! Holy smokes! I came home with blisters the size of dimes! I looked for solutions to prevent blisters and rested my feet! I bought new shoes and headed out the next weekend and attempted to walk 10 miles. The following weekend, using the “tried and true” blister prevention techniques, I came home with blisters the size of half dollars! OMG! I was in soooooooooo much pain I could barely walk! The blisters were so big and painful I couldn’t wear shoes for over a week! I asked my teammates and new friends for solutions and none of them had any that I hadn’t alreadytried. Their suggestion was to check on the 3-Day message boards and see what others had used that had worked for preventing blisters.
While looking on the message boards that summer, I came across a “new on the market” product called HikeGoo that, according to other walkers, worked wonders at preventing blisters. I immediately placed my first order for HikeGoo and two days later received the answer to my prayers –product with an awesome note from Rick, one of the creators of HikeGoo, wishing me luck with my continued training and his hope that the product would work for me. I applied the goo to my feet and went for my first blister-free training walk! I went through the rest of the training season without a single blister. I started sharing my results with my teammates and have gotten a few of them hooked on HikeGoo as well!
Over the past four seasons, I have continued buying HikeGoo and FootKinetics and sharing my love of them with everyone I come into contact with. I usually carry a tube (or samples) of the goo in my 3-Day training pack, so I can share with new teammates or someone that gets a hot spot (beginning blister) on a training walk or during the 3-Day.
Why does it work so much better than anything else I tried? This is what is posted on their site:
Why it works
The simple answer is that our barrier creams stick around much longer than any other blister prevention or anti-chafe products on the market. They contain a high percentage of specialty hard waxes. These waxes make the products persistent…. make them stick around all day to provide a protective layer that reduces rubbing, friction, calluses and blisters. Most other anti-chafe and blister prevention products are dimethicone-based. They are OK for thighs and chest but are too thin to stand up in the harsh environment of a shoe and you can’t apply enough to last all day.
There is so much hard wax in the HikeGoo, RunGoo, and WalkGoo emulsions, that if they cool down from the temperature that they are created without special processing, they become a hard lump in the tube that will not come out of the half inch tube opening! What we were able to figure out that nobody else has, is how to adjust the rheology (deformation and flow) of the product so that it can flow out of a tube.
The other key to our product’s persistence is the balance of lanolin alcohol in the emulsion. It is balanced to absorb water or excess sweat and make the emulsion “slipperier”. So we take the ever-present moisture at the skin-sock interface that usually contributes to blister formation, and integrate it into our products and actually make them better…slipperier.
And the beauty of the persistent emulsion is that all the while it is preventing blisters, it is also moisturizing your feet..so you can have blister prevention AND healthy feet.
I am a firm believer in using HikeGoo to prevent blisters. Whether you are running, walking, hiking, or just on your feet for prolonged periods of time, I think this product will be help prevent blisters for most everyone! They also have RunGoo, WalkGoo, and SilkStep to help with all your blister (and chafing) prevention needs! I have walked thousands of training miles and walked four Susan G. Komen 3-Days without blisters, and I completely believe that the reason for that is that I cover my feet in HikeGoo each time I walk more than 3 miles!
