You’re dripping with sweat and feeling fantastic after a heart-pounding, gut-busting workout  — it’s easy to justify a delicious, greasy burger and fries, but is that REALLY how you want to refuel your body? It’s important to consume snacks packed with protein after a good workout, not only to aid in muscle repair, but to restore your energy. If you are actively trying to lose weight, the last thing you want to do is snarf down more calories than you just burned! Here are some great ideas for post-workout snacks that will leave you feeling replenished {and guilt-free!}:

Hard-Boiled Eggs:  Eggs are a protein powerhouse, not to mention cheap and easy to prepare. Boil and peel several eggs at the start of your week, then just grab-and-go as needed!

Mixed Nuts:  Both tasty and convenient, mixed nuts are delicious and packed with good-for-you protein. Sort the nuts into snack-sized baggies ahead of time to control your portion size when you grab for them after your workout. Curious as to which nuts have the most protein bang? You might be surprised… plain ol’ peanuts are at the top of the list, followed closely by almonds and pistachios.

Apples + Nut Butter:  Nut butters are a great way to boost your protein. We aren’t just talking your average peanut butter anymore, folks… the options are plenty -cashew butter, almond butter, sunflower butter. Make sure you read labels to pass up any with added oils, preservatives, and trans fats.

Smoothies:  Silk Soymilk has 8 grams of heart-healthy, plant-powered protein -more than any other dairy-free milk brand, and it’s naturally low in saturated fat and has no cholesterol. Try this delicious, easy recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 banana {tip: keep a few bananas peeled and chopped in your freezer!}
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1/3 cup fresh or frozen berries {a handful}
  • 3/4 C Silk Soymilk
  • 1/8 tsp pure vanilla extract

Throw all ingredients into a blender and let it work it’s magic! YUM!

String Cheese:  It’s not just for kids! This childhood staple makes a great post-workout snack, too. Because they are individually wrapped, it’s easy to practice self-control.

Hummus: This simple, tasty dip is made from pureed chickpeas, tahini, and olive oil and is a great option for both protein and fiber! Pair with veggies of your choosing… carrots, bell peppers, celery, and/or peas are especially delicious.
