  • We avoid being in any family photos by always “volunteering” to be the photographer. If we are in the photos, we are standing behind people or furniture.
  • We don’t register for that 5k- the one your friends are doing, the one that supports a cause you care about – because we know we won’t be able to run the entire thing without walk breaks.
  • We stay behind on the beach blanket, explaining it’s to keep an eye on personal belongings so no one will steal keys or cell phones,  when the real reason is so that the beach cover up continues to do its duty and we don’t have to get in the water in a bathing suit.
  • We chaperone the picnic blanket on the family outing to the park, rather than participate in that pick up volley ball game where the world would see us huffing and puffing.
  • We walk right by the weight room at the gym.
  • We turn down social functions because we have “nothing” to wear, despite a closet full of clothes, some that we actually love. But they’re not tiny little cocktail dresses so we say no thank you to the invite.
  • We skip reunions of any kind. High school reunion. Family reunion. We RSVP our regrets because we don’t weigh what we weighed “back then” and “people will talk.”

I don’t weigh what I weighed in high school. Not even close. But I went to my 30th high school reunion last weekend anyway and had a blast.

Refuse to let fear win.

When it does, a little part of us dies each and every time.
