This past weekend, I watched a couple of my friends run the Showdown Half Marathon in Fairview, Texas. To me, that sounds much like a torture chamber, but they both willingly signed up for the run and ran it without someone forcing them to do it! My body is still on the crack-of-dawn-wake-up-on-the-weekend-for-my-3-day-training schedule, so I figured the best way to spend that time was cheering for them at their race. One of the girls that I was there to support had not run a formal race in over twenty years (and she chose to do a half marathon and did amazing!) and the other one is my friend, Beth, (who PR’d the heck out of the race!!) who had just walked the 3-Day with me! Yes, Beth is a special kind of crazy and that is one of the things I love about her!
Anywho…..I went to be a cheerleader for the people running because I felt it was important to show my support for them. I spent about 15 minutes Friday night making a couple of signs on some poster board with a sharpie and some colored highlighters. Really, it was no big deal, but to those runners….IT WAS A BIG DEAL!! Everyone that saw the signs thanked me for being out there. Everyone smiled when they saw the sign that said “You are awesome! You can do it!”
I know I feel the same way during the 3-Day, too! Seeing people come out and show support reminds me how awesome I am, or seeing them say “thanks” for walking makes me want to keep going. It makes me smile and realize I really can keep going. It reminds me that I am stronger than I think. It makes me feel like someone else believes in me, regardless of whether I believe in me at the time or not.
The thing is, we all need a cheerleader occasionally even if it’s not during a race or a huge athletic event. Maybe you need a cheerleader to get you through your workout today, or maybe you are struggling with eating the right foods. Just having someone in your corner to help you make good choices is empowering. Having someone to believe in you, encourage you to keep going, remind you that you can do this thing called life and do it well, is important sometimes! If you have just one special person in your corner to help you get through the hard times, you will feel so much stronger. If you are the cheerleader type person, make sure you show support to as many people as you can, because you never know who it will help or how much it will help them get through their struggles and reach their goals.
You’ve heard the saying “Smile, it may change someone’s life”? This is essentially the same thing. Being that “smile” for someone really can make a difference!
Being a support and cheerleader to others is one of the most special things about the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans! It is the reason we are here for you! We are all here to cheer for you and encourage you to keep going. Keep working out and eating right. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Keep striving to be a better version of you, and we’ll be over here bringing you more cowbell!
YOU CAN DO IT!!
YOU ARE AWESOME!!
