I was perusing the posts in our Sisterhood Facebook group this morning and saw one that made me smile. It read, ‘Stay strong sisters! The holidays are coming. Enjoy yourself, but don’t over-indulge and keep up working out! :) We can do this!’
The support in our group is amazing and real.
This little reminder was followed by this graphic:
Funny, cute, and probably true, because yes, this is the toughest season of the year when we’re trying to watch our weight or even LOSE weight. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and before we know it, we’ve gained a few (okay TEN) pounds, leading to feelings of failure, anger, and frustration. We’ve all been there, probably multiple times since those pesky holidays come every year.
I’m just going to say it: Thanksgiving is 11 days away, and Christmas is 39 days away. I KNOW, but with support and motivation from our fellow Sisters, and a little mindfulness of our own, we can do this. We can navigate mountains of mashed potatoes, the rivers of gravy, and the seemingly unending supply of desserts and whipped topping. We an celebrate the holidays and enjoy them without feeling anxiety about how much we’ll weigh when it’s all said and done.
Everything in moderation. Moderation with food (and drinks!), and moderation with worrying about each bite, lick, and taste.
This year at the Sisterhood we’re trying to head off the holiday gain off at the pass by hosting a DietBet game that starts just before Thanksgiving, and a Virtual Marathon called the Holiday Hustle that runs (ha ha) through December.
If you’re interested in joining our DietBet, we’d love to help keep you on track by motivating and supporting you. Our games are fun, and our participants are so willing to lift each other up. If you lose 4% of your weight in 4 weeks, you WIN, and our DietBet ends just before Christmas, so you can use your winnings for a few extra presents under the tree.
If you’d rather not DietBet with us, then please think about joining our Facebook Group. It’s a secret group, so nothing you post will be seen by anyone other than the members of the group. It’s our safe place to discuss weight loss – the victories and struggles, the highs and lows. I also highly recommend using a food tracker like MyFitnessPal or LoseIt to keep track of your daily intake. Know what you’re putting into your body is the first hurdle to weight loss. It’s often eye opening to see your daily journal, especially around the holidays. Even if you don’t plan to lose weight over the holidays, tracking is a good way to keep it all in check so you don’t end of gaining.
So how do you avoid the holiday weight gain anxiety? By being mindful of what you’re eating and keeping moving. By making a plan ahead of time and sticking with your goals. Having a support group or person helps immensely, too.
Those are the keys to successfully navigating AROUND the holiday weight gain. Together we can do this. Let’s start with setting a goal for Thanksgiving. Whether it’s creating a lighter meal with recipes from our own Shrinking Kitchen, getting up to exercise the morning of, or just skipping the seconds and leftovers.
How do you plan to make better choices this Thanksgiving?
