If you would have told me three years ago that one day I’d be doing yoga from a silk cloth hanging from a ceiling, I would have laughed in your face and pushed you down for mocking me! Not funny, my friend.
But you know what? I tried it, and I LOVED it!
Below is my personal account of Aerial Yoga from “Um, No” to “Sign me up!” Enjoy!
Step 1: So, one day I’m minding my own business on Facebook and then BAM! – an amazing aerial yoga video pops up on my screen and I’m instantly intrigued. What IS this beautiful swan-like swinging sorcery? I want to do that! Wait. Can I do that? Not possibly. Oh, but I want to! Look at them swinging gracefully in the air looking all stretched out, lean, relaxed, and connected. Yes, I need this. Ha! I’m from the middle of nowhere. No way is this anywhere near me… A few hours later my friend, who had also watched and shared the video, alerts me that there is a yoga place an hour away in the next state that does indeed have these classes. I’m in…
Step 2: I can barely contain my excitement as we drive to our first session. Fear sets in. I’ve never done yoga, and now I’m about to do it in acrobatic form? What the hell was I thinking?!?! This isn’t going to go well… please let the ER not be too full tonight. Here we go anyway…
Step 3: Whoa! It looks JUST LIKE THE VIDEO! This is so cool! A room filled with serenity, a very nice instruct…HOLY CRAP! Look at her body! Good feelings gone. I’m embarrassed. Please, beautiful lady instructor, don’t judge me. Oh good, she’s really nice. Let’s do this!
Step 4: Sizing my silk. A silk. What a pretty name for this beautifully colored piece of fabric. How cool is this?! Ok, do what she says. Fold silk… got it. Place low on my pubic bone… awkward, but got it. Walk forward, done. Bend over, lift feet, and swing!
Step 5: HOLY @#%&!!!!!! THAT HURTS!! I wanted more kids! I just swung my 185 lb. body from a cloth on my uterus. That’s going to leave an unanticipated bruise. How in the world am I supposed to look like a beautiful, graceful yoga goddess when I’m wincing in pain?! This isn’t fun! This is pain. How will I get through an entire hour of this? Okay, breathe, try again… OW! [email protected]#!!!!!!!
Step 6: Okay, this isn’t so bad. We’re swinging, we’re bending, and we’re yoga-ing. Oh! We get to sit in it too! This is neat! Oh… upside-down? Yeah? Alright. Well, must be brave. Trust my silk. Trust my body. Trust myself. I DID IT! THIS IS AMAZING! Oh, wait… there is all the blood in my body in my head. How do I get up? HELP!
Step 7: Climb? You want me to climb this silk to the ceiling? Ok. One foot in and stand. Good. Wrap foot to the left, do the same to the right, and… yeah, not yet. Beginner here, lady! Not happening yet. Wow, look at her! She’s amazing!
Step 8: I can’t believe the hour is almost up. I don’t want it to be over! What else can we try? Sure, I couldn’t do all of it, but I showed up and I did most of it! My hips hurt too much to decide if I want to do it again yet, but I’m not sorry I tried it! This has been amazing!
Step 9: The end! I did it! Now we get to stretch out, full body, in this amazing hammock-like silk and let all my worries, fears, and doubts sway away. This. This is what I imagined it to be. Yoga, and me, in all its blissful glory. I feel light, long, lean, and so goddess-like. Why must this place be a whole hour away from home? No! No negativity in my silk. Serenity.
Step 10: Time to go. Smoothies? Who said smoothies? Heck yeah, I want one! Oh, this is heaven! Pure almond butter, banana, honey, and chia seed heaven! I am SO coming back! I’m a brave, strong beast! Sign me up!
Okay, so I wasn’t able to sign up as childcare is hard to secure on a regular basis and the drive is horrendously far when I’m already running my kiddo around. The good news? I can go back whenever I am able to on a visitor status, and I’ve done exactly that! I’ve been able to go a few more times and it just gets better every single time! It’s no longer as painful as it was the first time, and I’m now able to climb my silk to the ceiling. It’s such an empowering experience! It takes a certain amount of bravery, confidence, strength, and grace that I didn’t even know I had in me! However, I found it, I found it all, and I’ve been able to use it in many parts of my life.
No regrets. If you have the opportunity, try it. Just try it! You won’t be sorry, and I can promise you’ll go back for more!
