One of my favorite parts of this healthy-living journey is the self-discovery aspect.
When I fell in love with running and Crossfit, I learned that I’m more athletic than I ever believed. This gave me a new confidence. When I completed 2 rounds of Whole 30, I learned that I can survive without soda and processed foods.
My son and I are relocating from California to Oregon in 2 months, so I’ve been cutting way back on expenses. That means no Crossfit for now. Because of that (and a new goal that I’ve set for myself, that I’m not quite ready to share), I’ve been working out at home & in the apartment gym.
After several months of this now, I just learned something about myself.
I can’t just go workout. I need to have a plan. In the last couple weeks, I discovered that if I don’t have my workouts planned out for the week, I will do exactly what I’ve planned.
This was one of the great things for me about Crossfit. The coaches/trainers do all the programming. I just showed up and did what they told me. Since I started working out at home, I’ve been writing down my workouts for the upcoming week on Sunday, but I really thought I was doing this to make it easier for me during the week, and so I didn’t have to think about it every night after work. I thought about it sort of like menu planning.
I did not realize that this written plan was actually me setting myself up for a successful week of workouts. How did I learn this about myself? Last week, I did not write down any workouts. I was going to be out of town part of the week, so I figured I could just wing it the part of the week I was still home. I was wrong. I had no motivation to get up early, because I didn’t want to wake up and figure out what I needed to do.
I was missing workouts because I didn’t have them planned out.
Have you been missing workouts? What are your workout roadblocks?
Here are 4 common roadblocks and how you can bust through them and be successful!
Roadblock: Not having a plan.
Success: What is your goal? If you are clear on your goal, then it is easier to create action steps (or a plan) to help you achieve that goal. With these action steps you can find a class or an online workout program to help you reach your goal!
Roadblock: Lack of time.
Success: Look at your calendar for the upcoming week. Make workout appointments for yourself. Write them down on your calendar. Commit to keeping your appointments with yourself.
Success: Getting bored from your current workout plan is the worst! Shake things up! If you only walk on the treadmill, try a different form of cardio. There are virtually an unlimited selection of workouts – Yoga, Pilates, Kickboxing, Zumba just to name a few! Find a video or go to a class. There’s no reason to force yourself to keep the same old fitness regimen!
Roadblock: Overwhelmed with your choices.
Success: I’ve been there! Just pick one program and test it out for a week or two. Try a new class once or twice. Either you like it or you don’t. The beauty of this day and age is that you can try all kinds of new things. Keep an open mind, have fun and you will find a program you love!
Discovering our roadblocks and then having a way to bust through them is a great way to move forward in your healthy-living journey!
