I’m writing this as a reminder. Yes, a reminder to YOU to not ever give up on this journey to a healthier you. I hear you – it is hard work – and it always will be, but let me recap to you why you started this, why you continue this, and why you’ll never be sorry you did.
First and foremost, you do this for YOU. That statement is in fact the hardest concept to grasp in this healthier-you journey. What is this talk of “taking care of yourself”? Some days I’m not sure either, but you have got to take some time out of every single day for you and you only. It isn’t just a motivating thought, it is absolutely crucial to success and the very health of your body, mind, and soul. No one can do it for you. Every day you wake up and face the challenges of making healthy choices. You make healthy choices for your husband, for your children, and you even make uber-healthy choices for your pets! What about YOU? You’re exhausted, I get it, but no one can do it for you. You’re important. Take the time and do it for you.
You also do this for the person you were before this journey. She isn’t gone. As a matter of fact, she’s always right around the corner. She’s the guilty voice in your head when you eat a cookie. She’s also the bitch that makes you want the cookie. She’s that one that does back-flips in your mind when you put on those jeans in the dressing room. She’s the one that reminds you of the things you didn’t like so much about you when you weren’t as healthy. She’s the gentle nudge when you leave the kitchen and when you go into the kitchen. You love her and you hate her. Either way, you’re stuck with her. She’s a part of you (part of your past, yes, but still you). Sometimes she’s the fun one… Don’t completely let go of her.
You do this for your family. You do this for your daughter as we sit in the little tiny amusement park seat whirling around into oblivion as her hair twirls in her tiny, beaming face as she squeals, “Again, mommy!” Yes, sweetie! I DO want to ride again, and again and again and again! I never want to get off this ride and you’re the reason why! I want to go zip-lining with my husband and not be afraid to be too heavy for a harness. I want to ride horses on the beach and I want to swim in the ocean without my entire body writhing in pain when I’m done. I want to live! I want to see my babies grow up and I want to be part of everything they are part of. I want to run 5Ks with my daughter when she grows up. I want to be a healthy mom! I want to be a healthy ME…for them!
I’ll only be sorry if I go back. I’ll never be sorry for going forward. As a matter of fact, I’ll never be sorry as long as I know I gave each day a good, solid try at being my best. I know where the choices of my past got me, and I know where the choices I make today will take me. It’s a much happier place than where I was back then. Sure, I’ve changed, but I’m still me.
I’m still me – just a happier, healthier me, and that’s pretty darn good!
You’ve got this. You always have.
