Accountability is so crucial to weight loss and yet it can be so hard to come by. You could find an accountability buddy or join a DietBet through the Sisterhood. You could join a program like Weight Watchers where there are weekly weigh-ins. I mix things up each month and like to alternate between different methods to keep myself going. This month, with the flowers in bloom and spring in the air in my town of Louisville, I have decided to do the April 30 Challenge through Hike It Baby and I encourage anyone with a baby or children to check it out.
What is Hike It Baby?
Hike It Baby (HIB) states on their website that they are “a parents group dedicated to getting families together and out into nature with newborns and little ones. There are branches in over 200 cities around the country and internationally. We have a wide variety of hikes and urban strolls and the best part is being a member of Hike it Baby is FREE!”
In practice, they help connect people who enjoy getting outdoors. Each branch has a FaceBook page where you can see hikes coming up for the week. A hike can be anything from a half mile toddler led hike that ends in a playground to a 5 mile adult paced hike where you use a baby carrier and navigate rough terrains and hills (my favorite)!
What is the April 30 Challenge?
This is a challenge to either hike 30 miles or get outside for 30 minutes 3 times a week. Of course the 30 miles is for those who have little babies that can either be worn or put in a stroller and the goal of 30 minutes 3 times a week would be for families with more grown up children that like to walk and run.
When you sign up for the challenge, you get a HIB bumper sticker. As you go, you log your mileage and times. There is a FaceBook page where you can see people from all over the U.S. and also the world sharing photos of their hikes. It’s neat and motivational at the same time!
Anything that gets you out of the house and moving is great and the key to a healthier lifestyle is trying out different things until you find what suits you. If you enjoy the outdoors and want to find ways to spend more time outside, head over to hikeitbaby.com and see if there is a branch in your city. If there isn’t start one! And if you’re in Louisville, join my branch! I lead hikes every week!
