If I could target any one part of my body to tone up overnight, it would definitely be my abs and core. But honestly, I cannot stand resistance work. I don’t do it nearly often enough, and the idea of doing huge marathon (read: more than 20 minutes) sessions of core work makes me want to stick a fork in my eye.

Enter the 10 Minute Solution Best Belly Blasters DVD. It really is a great solution for those of us that consider ab work a necessary evil, LOL!

Here is the description from the back of the box. The text in red are my own comments that I’ve added on each of the workouts.

SIX PACK AB ATTACK (Jessica Smith): Whip your waistline into shape with these fat-burning, belly-blasting exercises that will help you win the battle of the bulge once and for all. This one does not mess around. It’s really, really fast. It’s really, really good. It really, really hurts. But the leader keeps calling you “Soldier” because I think it must come from some sort of boot camp style DVD. That was annoying. This one was 11 minutes long.

WAIST SLIMMER (Lara Hudson): Flatten your belly and slim your waist with this super-targeted Pilates segment that focuses on toning your entire core. I honestly never did this one. But my husband, Dave, said he really liked it. I saw him doing it, and my son actually did it a few times with him. There were often shouts of “ow!” and “I can’t do that!” and “She’s way too flexible!” and “This is tough!”… All signs of a great workout if you ask me.

BELLY FAT BURNER (Amy Bento): This series of belly blasting exercises will tighten your tummy, strengthen the lower back and zap away any love handles. This one wasn’t a bad workout, but the quality of the video wasn’t all that great. The camera work was all over the place…there was more than once where we couldn’t tell what we were supposed to be doing because the camera wasn’t showing the move. The cues were really bad, too, all of a sudden she was on the next move. It took us a few times before we just got used to doing this one so that the late cues didn’t matter. And the music is really bad and synthesized. None of these are deal breakers, it just made for an annoying 10 minutes.

DANCER’S ABS (Jennifer Galardi): Shake and shimmy as you dance your way to a sleek and sexy midsection with these belly moves. O.K. This one was laughable. Dave has been doing the DVD as well (actually, more than me), and he had been avoiding this one. I told him I had to do it “for review purposes”. I ended up apologizing to him profusely. I got a good workout, but I could see how a guy would avoid it like the plague. It had almost a belly dancing feel to it.  A lot of hip swaying and isolation exercises. Those of the mind-in-the-gutter variety may have found it slightly obscene (or hilarious) with all the hip thrusting. I could feel it the next day, but I’ll be doing this one solo next time. It was 11 minutes long.

PILATES PERFECT ABS (Suzanne Bowen): Pilates is famous for delivering a sexy midsection without traditional crunches or sit-ups. This program delivers those Pilates Perfect Abs. O.K. This is the one that had me yelling “You want me to do WHAT?” I’ve done workouts with this instructor before, and I really like her. She’s not annoying and her cues are usually really good. This one just happened to be a super tough workout. I was definitely feeling this one the next day. This one was 10 minutes long.

BIKINI BELLY (Jessica Smith): Combine calories burning cardio with standing ab exercises to sculpt your six pack and blast away fat. This multi-tasking workout will get your belly into bikini shape-fast! This one was definitely the most cardio oriented of the bunch. It was fast moving again, and really left both of us wondering how it was grouped in with the other workouts on the DVD.  Too much cardio, not enough targeted ab work.  Not horrible, but not our favorite.

Overall, we both really liked the DVD. We loved the fact that they are all about 10 minutes long so it’s easy to sneak one in anytime. Most of the workouts are really challenging, but not so challenging that they couldn’t be modified to some degree. Our 6 and 8 year old kids joined in with the workouts on more than one occasion!
