I am my biggest cheerleader.

I am also my biggest naysayer.

  • You can’t do that.
  • You can’t run.
  • You can’t run a half marathon.
  • You can’t race a triathlon.
  • You don’t know how to race a bike.
  • You can’t lose those last 10-15 lbs.
  • You can’t keep the weight off.
  • You can’t expose your body for the world to see.
  • You don’t have time.
  • You have too many children.
  • The logistical issues are a nightmare.
  • You love food too much.
  • You have no self-control.
  • You’re too tired.
  • You don’t have enough discipline.
  • It’s too hard.
  • And on and on and on.

The “I can’ts” and “excuses” reach a fevered pitch in the weeks leading up to ANY and EVERY race I have ever done and in between races, too.  Sometimes I am so busy telling myself what I CAN’T do that I lose sight of what I CAN DO and HAVE DONE already.

I am the ONLY one holding me back.

Me, me, ME.

Luckily for me, I have seen this pattern emerge over the last two years of trying new things, doing things I never dreamt I could do and SURVIVING and THRIVING through whatever obstacles are thrown my way.  I know that I can and should push the negative thoughts to the side because they do not help me reach my goals one. single. bit.  There is plenty in the world to drag me down- life circumstances, people, stuff.  I don’t need to add to that mix.

Sure, I may not be the fastest, the most elegant, the strongest.  I will most likely NEVER win a race.

However, I have done so much since joining the Sisterhood, things that I said I couldn’t do, like…..:

That triathlon race is a week from Sunday.  The last few weeks have been fraught with nerves, anxiety and and a lot of “you can’ts”.  But true to form, I have put on my mental game hat and I’m embracing what I CAN DO.

I can race a triathlon.  I can swim 300yds in a lake.  I can bike 11 miles on a relatively flat course.  I can run 3.1 miles.

Come Sunday August 14th, I will do all of that and more.  Once again, I will scratch away at the “I can’ts” and say once again, I CAN.

What is holding you back?  Post one negative thought and then TWO positive thoughts.  What CAN you do?  It can be weight loss related, fitness related, life-related or really, ANYTHING.  Don’t let YOU be the thing that is holding YOU back.  We are capable of so much if we only allow ourselves to believe WE CAN DO IT.
