UPDATE TO THE UPDATE! — Unfortunately, we never heard back from one of our winners, so I had to pick another one. The new winner is Deb! Congrats, Deb!

UPDATED — Congratulations to our winners, Kirsten and Sahutske! I’ve left comments and I will try to contact you on Twitter!

As I draw closer and closer to my first half marathon, I realize that there are a few things that I now consider to be indispensable on my journey. I never really thought of myself as a “product person”. I would usually just buy whatever was on sale, and then when that was full of holes and no elastic left or just stopped working altogether, I would go out and buy another of whatever was on sale.

As my runs became longer, I realized that I needed to upgrade some of my gear. I branched out as far as types of things I use and now my runs (and post runs) are much more comfortable.

Here are some of my new favorite running things:

The Sahara 22oz Palm Holder by FuelBelt – For the longest time, I didn’t even drink water on my runs. When I realized that I couldn’t do that for very much longer, I struggled with trying to find something that worked. I tried a waist style hydration belt for a while and HATED it. I finally ordered this and I’m in love with it. The large pocket is the perfect size for a packet of Sports Beans, and it has a small pocket for a key or two. I don’t go out without this thing now.

I love listening to music when I’m running outside. The problem I always had, though, was that nothing ever stayed in my ear. I also only ever use one earbud so that I can hear my GPS and also be aware of what’s going on around me. That meant that I had one earbud hanging down the inside of my shirt so that it wouldn’t bounce around. Then I found this little gem, the One Good Earbud Flexible Earhook Headphone. Now, my earbud doesn’t fall out and I never miss the alarm on my GPS and I can still hear…say…the cheers of my adoring crowd as I cross the finish line in a dead spring.  Or something.

After my long runs, or particularly hard runs, my legs always, ALWAYS ache. I’d tried Epsom salts and really cold baths (I didn’t have the nerve to add ice to them) but neither of those things ever touched the ache. I decided to bite the bullet and invest in some compression socks. LOVE! The Smartwool PhD Graduated Compression Ultra Light Socks seriously save my legs. Plus, they have the added bonus of making me look super sexy when I wear them with shorts.
