There Is No Such Thing As An Ideal Runner

I was with a friend at a cook out over Labor Day weekend when we got to talking about an upcoming 10k and 5k  in our area.  Like me, she is relatively new to the whole running thing. When I looked at the registration form online, I grew a bit intimidated.  It had too many details about the pace in which an ‘ideal runner’ should complete these races and suggested if you are slow, you might want to consider the 1-mile Fun Run, a different event altogether. This is not qualifying for Boston, people, this is a local community race I’m talking about. I am smart enough to know there is no such thing as an ideal runner.

I AM slow. In the last year I have become a smidge less slow, but really only a smidge. I am OK with that. And after reading Lisa’s post from last week, I am even more OK with that.

Telling someone they shouldn’t do a race – whether walking or running – because they are slow is against my religion.  It is just plain wrong. Who cares?! What matters is you are OFF THE COUCH! That is my new motto these days! OFF THE COUCH!

A short while after that discussion with my friend, I learned the Sisterhood’s annual virtual 5k is on the horizon! This year it’s the Zombie Dash virtual 5k & 10k. Yes! Friends, here is a chance for you to lace up those sneakers and get moving at your own pace and right where you are. You can map out a route right from your own flippin front door! You don’t have to head across town for packet pick up. The packet comes to YOU!  AND you get a finishers medal!  I am here to tell you that the ONLY medals I have received for any of my races have been the ones I sweated my tuckus off for here at the Sisterhood. And they mean the world to me!

Wouldn’t this be a grand time to encourage your family to also get off the couch and join you? Or gather some friends and get your Zombie on together? Followed by a post-race brunch? (Bloody Mary’s anyone?). I am going to try recruiting some friends for this one and hosting a brunch afterward, thus providing the added incentive to clean my house (more cardio!). We will walk or run it together and look like a band of hoodlums in the neighborhood and it will be a blast.

Not sure where to start? There are tons of resources online and free apps for your smart phone. All types of Couch to 5k programs and Couch to 10k programs. Lots of them are free. The best time to start getting ready for the Zombie Dash is TODAY.  First by registering, second by lacing up the sneakers, third by putting a hand on that door knob, opening the door and heading outside. Then do it again. Repeat. Zombies, watch out, we are on our way.

Who’s in?!
