First Name – Mary

State – Maryland

What is the longest distance you have run? 13.1 miles

Why did you start running? To challenge myself, to increase my exercise on my weight loss journey, and to give me an outlet during a period of depression.

Why do you KEEP running? To challenge myself, to stay active on my weight loss journey, for stress relief , for some “me-time” and because it is cheaper than therapy!

What is your most proud running moment? Finishing my first half marathon on June 1, 2013

Have you ever had a runner’s high? Nope! Still waiting for this!

Have you ever lost a toenail? Not yet!

Do you have a BRF (best running friend)? My dear friend Chri and I met when I joined a running club about five years ago and have stayed good friends. She truly inspires me.

Do you have a running mantra and what is it? “1,2,3,4 You are stronger than before.” It may sound silly, but I say this over and over and have my feet hit the pavement in rhythm to this. Getting lost in a mantra helps me to tune out any negative messages I might have running through my head.

What songs get you through the tough runs? Melissa Etheridge – I Run for Life; Beyonce – Run the World; Chumbawamba – Tubthumper. Iron Butterfly “Radar Love.”

What is your favorite piece of running gear? My iPhone with my RunKeeper app and my playlists.

What would be your dream race to run (if you like to run races)? Any race in Ireland would be a dream come true.

Have you ever thought of throwing in the towel? No! I have had “off” days but none where I wanted to give up for good.

What running apps/sites do you use? RunKeeper (free); RunningLog Free (free app to log your miles on a calendar, keep notes on your runs. It also tallies your mileage and average pace for the week and month.) Gymboss – free app, great for setting up timers for interval training.

What piece of advice would you give a new runner? Do not be discouraged! Do not worry if you are slow. Take it from a slow runner like me, no one is paying attention to your pace but you! You must “run your own race.” The running community is incredibly supportive, no matter what your pace may be! I also recommend newbies consider joining a running club. The fellowship is wonderful and being with like-minded people will inspire you to keep challenging yourself.
