Here is the next runner to share with you as part of our *Featured Runner Series*. I went to high school with Nanci- we were in marching band together and spent many hot summers and Falls together having a blast (she played flute, I played clarinet).  We lost touch after high school, going our separate ways, finding each other again through through the power of Facebook.  I have watched her grow as a runner and I SO proud of her!  Read on for her story and make sure to her a shout-out, a high-five, or a YEE-HAW! in the comments below.

First Name – Nanci

State – Florida

What is the longest distance you have run? – Half marathon

Why did you start running? Originally back in 2006, for weight loss. When I started up again in 2011, it was stress relief and to take better care of myself after having been through ALOT.

Why do you KEEP running? Because it’s cheaper than therapy… Seriously, it’s MY time when I’m out there. And I have to take care of myself. It makes me feel strong and proud of the fact that I can do it. I’ve even become the person who loves to run in the morning before work.

What is your most proud running moment? When I ran the Sarasota Half Marathon in March and PR’d by almost 13 minutes. I never expected it and cried like a baby when I crossed the finish line.

Have you ever had a runner’s high? Yes and I love it. It’s usually in a race, but recently it’s been very apprarent in my bridge training back in April for the Iron Girl half marathon. That race is complete and I still go out to run the bridge again just because I enjoy it.

Have you ever lost a toenail? In the process, yes. My first!

Do you have a BRF (best running friend)? For training, it would be my husband. He’s a trooper and pushes me harder. For races, I love starting a race with a friend, but I tend to end up on my own and I enjoy that too. Somehow my thoughts are easier to deal with while I’m running. Anything seems possible.

Do you have a running mantra and what is it? I just remind myself that I CAN do it. I’ve been known to cry while I run just from the stress relief it offers me and that is a great reminder than I need that time to take care of myself. I also have an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.

What songs get you through the tough runs? Anything Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Florida, Lady Gaga, and don’t laugh, the Rocky IV Soundtrack. My current favorite song that I LOVE to run to is Catch My Breath by Kelly Clarkson. It really got me through the Sarasota Half Marathon.

What is your favorite piece of running gear? My Brooks Glycerin 10 and my Garmin Forerunner 110

What would be your dream race to run (if you like to run races)? I would love to run any race out of state, but since I am not one to travel, it really would be a dream!

Have you ever thought of throwing in the towel? I think about giving up and walking sometimes, but then I remember each time I’ve crossed a finish line and it keeps me going.

What running apps/sites do you use? I track my mileage on dailymile.com and upload my Garmin data to Garmin Connect.

What piece of advice would you give a new runner? No matter how slow you run, you are still running. Just within the last few months have I realized that I really am a runner. I get out there and I do it. No one can take that away from me. And now I am actually contemplating a full marathon.
