Here is the next runner to share with you as part of our *Featured Runner Series*. Siyen is relatively new to running and finding her groove.  She just celebrated her birthday on July 3rd – HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY SIYEN!- and she loves to run while her daughter scooters next to her.  Read on for her story and make sure to her a shout-out, a high-five, or a YEE-HAW! in the comments below.

First Name: Siyen

State: Washington

What is the longest distance you have run? 3.1 miles! I’m still doing run/walk intervals but find I’m running a lot more than walking these days.

Why did you start running? My eight year old daughter actually wanted to start running and I like to support her in her interests. We kept great pace together at first but now she has discovered that she really prefers to “run” with her scooter along side me and I discovered that running helped to boost weight loss! Down 14 lbs already!

Why do you KEEP running? It was definitely not the activity that I would have picked for myself and I’ll admit I really hated it at first. My impression of runners was that they run all.the.time. Like even in the rain and stuff! And around Seattle that happens a lot! I’m so glad that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone though because what I discovered is that when you aren’t tired all the time and you just feel all around healthier that a little running in the rain isn’t such a bad trade off. In hindsight this makes total sense to me now. I’ve never met an unhappy runner, have you?

What is your most proud running moment? I had been running for a little over two months and one day after completing my work out I felt so good that I thought to myself “I think I could actually go farther/longer if I want to”. And I did! That was a huge breakthrough for me. I think that was the moment I started to actually think “I could start to like this running thing.”

Have you ever had a runner’s high? If by high you mean that happy, energetic feeling you get after returning home from a run then YES! Although the alone time that running affords me to gather my wits about me may have something to do with it too. 😉

Have you ever lost a toenail? NO! Oh my goodness I didn’t even know that happens!

Do you have a BRF (best running friend)? Pandora and I always run together. That is the radio streaming app on my phone. My favorite running partner (when she decides to go with me) is my daughter, Ainsley. I love the mom/daughter time and the fact that we are doing something healthy together.

Do you have a running mantra and what is it? I’m not sure it is a mantra but I do have a tendency to tell myself “you just have to run until you get to that tree…..you made it this far… might as well go to THAT tree!”

What songs get you through the tough runs? I don’t have any particular song but something hard and fast paced.

What is your favorite piece of running gear? I really love my shoes! My friend who is a long time runner suggested I go to her favorite running store and get fitted for a good pair of running shoes. Wow what a difference they made! No more shin splints!

What would be your dream race to run (if you like to run races)? I’m still just dreaming of running an entire 3.1 miles. Let’s talk races after that goal is met, shall we?

Have you ever thought of throwing in the towel? YES! Pretty much the first half of every work out! And then I get this burst of determination that decides that quitting after the half way point would be such a waste and I manage to push through.

What running apps/sites do you use? I am using active.com C25K app. I’ve also been reading up on tips for new runners at runnersworld.com and coolrunnings.com

What piece of advice would you give a new runner? Just give it a try and stick with it. Take it slow. It’s not a race…. yet. 😉
