For many of us, Sundays are a day of rest. Maybe for you, that means going to church, spending some down time with your friends and family, having a day “off” from any kind of schedule whatsoever or gearing up for the week ahead. It might also  mean a rest day and a break from our workout or training schedule.

Here at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans,  we do a variety of “themed”  days from time to time. Maybe you have heard of them – Motivational Mondays, Toot Your Horn Tuesdays, for example. Today, I am proclaiming self-kindness Sunday. Whether this becomes a weekly feature at SJ or not, matters little. What matters is that for TODAY, spend the day being a bit self-focused. This is not the same as selfish or self-absorbed. This is a day for taking care of YOU.

For me, it will mean sleeping in until at least 9:00. While I don’t have to get up every morning to get kids off to school, I do get up most days to see my husband off to work at 5:30 a.m. I take Sundays to sleep in and there is not an ounce of guilt in my being about that. I go to church, but there is no reason I need to be at an early Mass when the priest is turning the lights on.  I also try to spend Sundays catching up on a few odds and ends around the house, napping and reading. And there is usually hot chocolate involved and marshmallows of various flavors. I track all of it in my food journal. It is not a binge. It is a deliberate treat.

I know for many of you with families this is a hard task but I urge you, do at least one thing today that serves as a good will gesture FROM you, TO you. Having a day where you put YOU first can do wonders in terms of restoring your batteries and shoring up your kindness toward the world. Monday will be here soon enough with all that Mondays bring. Will you join me today in having some downtime for yourself?

How will you be extra kind to yourself today?
