The Monster Green Smoothie. I have created it. And it’s a beast.

If you’re like me, you have precious little time in the kitchen, which can lead to some not-so-smart food choices. I’ve always been a fan of green smoothies to get my veggies in first thing in the morning, and knowing that I have nourished my body with vitamins and minerals. In experimenting with several different recipes, I have come up with a green smoothie on steroids. I make two or three at a time and keep them in my refrigerator in mason jars for the next couple of quick morning breakfasts. It’s definitely not a sweet one, so if you’re more into the sweet green smoothies, create them with a higher ratio of fruit to vegetables.

Here’s the recipe that I use:

MONSTER GREEN SMOOTHIE

1 cup spinach (packed)

1 cup lacinato kale

1-2 celery stalks

1/2 cucumber

1 banana

1 green apple (or fruit of choice)

1/4 inch fresh ginger

2 tbsp lemon juice

wheat grass to preference

parsley to perference

water or almond milk

1 tbsp (or more) chia seeds

1 tbsp (or more) maca powder

1 tsp (or less) of each:

cayenne pepper

turmeric

cinnamon

Additions/substitutions: hemp seeds, avocado, chard, additional fruit, flax seed, coconut oil, coconut water, almond butter (note: I try to use all organic ingredients)

The great thing about green smoothies is that you can play around with flavor combinations! This just happens to be one of my favorites and ensures I get my vitamins and minerals for the day. They’re also great for a quick detox if you drink them for two meals a day (I usually do 3 or 4 days).

If you decide to attempt the Monster Green Smoothie, snap a photo and share it with us!
