The North Face Mountain Athletics program was designed to help athletes realize their goals. Whether you are a runner, climber, or just want to improve your general fitness, the Mountain Athletics App has a customizable workout just for you! Each of these activity-based, goal-driven programs will help you train with purpose and get in top shape for your running, back-country skiing, or rock climbing objectives.

The North Face Mountain Athletics App is totally free on iOS. Features include:

  • Expert-created workout programs
  • Workout schedules
  • Videos and tutorials
  • Progress monitoring
  • Detailed session calendars
  • Coaching messages

I am in desperate need of fitness guidance right now (ahem, meaning basically starting over from scratch), so I decided to use the app to work on my overall fitness, instead of a specific activity. Also? As much as I would love to be climbing mountains, the nearest peaks are several hundred miles away from me.

The Workout

Day One focused on my upper and lower body strength. Good thing I haven’t canceled that gym membership that’s been sitting idle for months!

  • Warm Up: 4 rounds of 6x Bench Press, 10x Air Squats, 10x Sit Ups, Stretch.
  • Bench Press: 6 rounds of 5x Bench Press, Stretch.
  • Box Squat: 5x Box Squat, Stretch.

My arms and legs? Jelly. But that quivering-jelly feeling must be a good thing, right? I’ve got a lot of work to do, folks. Stick with me and give me a kick in the rear when needed, m’kay? Afterall, #ITrainFor ME. Sometimes, I just need a little reminder.

As you are doing the workout, you can do a simple swipe down on your phone with your finger to count off the rounds as you do them. Helpful for absent-minded people like myself. Round 1, Round 2, OH! SQUIRREL! Wait, what round am I on again? When you are done with your workout, the app will tell you the overall workout time and you have the option to share it via social media. Yes, I am one of THOSE people who like to blast every workout I do to the world. If I don’t post it, it didn’t happen! The only con for me regarding the app is that a lot of the workouts have to be done in a gym. It’s just not feasible for me to be at the gym several times a week right now. I may have to do some improvising.

My next session is centered around lower and upper body unilateral strength. Now, I have absolutely no clue what a scotty bob is, so I’m super glad that video tutorials are included.

I’m pretty sure scotty bobs are going to be the death of me.
