Carving My Own Path

[ 10 ] 05/07/2009 |

Okay, so I totally got the idea for this post from one of the Biggest Loser contestants.  If you watch the show, you know that the contestants spend 16 weeks on the Biggest Loser campus if they‘re not voted off.  Their job for these 16 weeks is to lose weight.  And it’s a full time job.  They work out at least 8 hours a day.  Then, they’re sent home until the final weigh-in at the live finale.  A contestant this week was talking about how on campus everything was laid out for them.  Now, at home, she’s on her own.  And she’s had to learn how to carve her own path.

That phrase stuck with me.  A lot.

I remember one day a while back I had this thought.  At the time I assumed I was at 180-something (really, I weighed 200-something), and I kid you not, I said to myself, I should gain about 40 more pounds so that I can go on that show.

I mean, really?  GAIN weight, just so I could go on a TV show to LOSE weight?  What kind of crazy, messed up way of thinking is that??!!

Luckily, it wasn’t long after that crazy moment, I had my “wake-up” call and decided to change my life.  I decided that I was going to lose weight or bust.  I made up a work out plan that I knew that I could stick with no matter what my schedule was.  (Lucky for me, for now, I can do more than that if I choose.)  I made sure I had a great support system.  Then, eventually, I educated myself on good nutrition.  And off I set.  I had started to carve my own path.

Have you ever carved a path in the woods?  You set out with a destination in mind, and for a while, the path you’ve chosen is simple and easy to follow.  Then you hit an obstacle, you have to backtrack, and start again.  It may take a while, but you will get to your destination.

I’ve hit many obstacles in my weight loss path, and when I do, I backtrack and start again.  I feel like it’s taken me forever, but I’m getting there.  It’s all about figuring out how to get to my “destination“.

It’s not possible that we can all pick up and head to the Biggest Loser campus.  It is not possible that we all can set aside at least 8 hours a day to work out.  And it’s not possible that we will never have a slice of cheesecake ever again.  (I’ve had cheesecake on the brain.  Not a good sign, people.)

But it is possible for us to create a work out plan that we can follow no matter what.  It is possible that we can find people to support us on our paths. (Hello! You’re HERE!) It is possible to have good nutrition, but find ways to have that piece of cake or that glass of wine occasionally.

It is possible for us to carve our own paths.  And even though we’ll hit obstacles, we’ll get to our destinations.

So, now I want to know…have you carved your own weight loss path?  Tell me about it.

About april: I'm a brand new cyclist! In just a few short months, the sport has reminded me that it's all about the journey, and I need to enjoy the ride. I live with my two dogs and two birds, and love to spoil my nephew. Oh yeah, and I'm 32. View author profile.

Hah! I have to tell you how glad I am to know that I am not the only one who has actually said the words “I should just gain 40 pounds to go on Biggest Loser”. I swear to you that I said those very words to a co-worker barely a month ago!

I love this post, April, and I can really relate. I'm in my late 30s, and have been overweight for most of the past ten or so years. I've had some losses and some gains, but I've never been able to keep off the weight or really change my lifestyle. This time I feel different though. I feel that for the first time, I've really found a balance.

I've heard those words over and over “Find a balance”, and I don't think I ever really knew what it meant (I mean, semantically, of course I know what it means, but in terms of finding my own balance, I never knew how). Now, instead of the completely unrealistic (for me, anyway) goal of working out every single day and watching every single calorie, I've found a plan that works for me. I still work out, but not to the point of burning myself out after a few weeks. I still watch my calories, but not to the point of denying myself the occasional treat.

not yet, but i'm working on it. working on finding exercise that i can enjoy, but also burns a lot of calories. working on finding healthy food I like. i've been at this since january, but i've only adapted it into a lifestyle rather than a diet in the past couple of months.

I have been reading this blog for about a month now. I love it and it inspired me to do the 30 day shred. I am now in week 3 of shredding. I have cut sugar out of my diet and watching what I am eating. I am also running 2 miles each day. What I am finding frustrating is that I feel great, have more energy and cofidence but I am just not losing the pounds. I feel like I am losing inches, but the tape measure says different. Any suggestions?

Awesome post, April! Great food for thought. I've got a good eating plan in place, but I really need an ACTIVITY plan as well. I wrote a few days ago about trying to live a NEW NORMAL ~ the kind of lifestyle I envision myself being able to brag about in the future ~ because if I continue to live the “old normal” I'll never get rid of my bad habits. (http://a-woman-of-moderation.blogspot.com/2009/…)

I think I'll sit down and write down a physical activity plan right now, too! Thanks for the inspiration!!

Carvin' a path, huh? The thing I'm trying to carve is myself into a smaller sized person. One that is not only smaller in size but healthier and wealthier (cuz I don't drink cokes or fast food). So far I'm doing pretty good on the no cokes and better on the eating out. I'm also doing great on the exercising part, thanks to the sisters! this week is the first week since March 30 I haven't exercised…sinus gunk is keepin' me down…and I REALLY MISS IT!! so I think that's a great sign. I'm going to keep it up and hopefully by Christmas time I will look like a person instead of the “goodyear blimp”!! I have a long way to go, but I am very motivated to keep it up!!

Thanks for commenting! I would suggest you keep a food journal to see exactly how much you're eating a day. Then you can adjust your diet accordingly.

Great post!! I've really struggled these past few weeks and it was nice reading how sometimes obstacles are going to be in our paths and we may backtrack, but we must get right back on the path and keep walking towards our final destination Thank you!! I'm linking up in my Sunday Stars post tomorrow!!

You are SO right about obstacles. Lately, I am my own obstacle. I exercise but I completely ruin it with my eating. I've been on “the last 10″ since December. DECEMBER! It is now MAY. It's been so easy for me to lose the bulk of the weight and be “happy enough”. But I'm not truly happy, not as long as I have dimples in my thighs and a belly. I'm very much happy-ER than I was, but still not there.

So I'm starting again, trying again, to make it to my destination. Trying to carve a new path this time.
