Run, Baby, Run

September 18th, 2009 | Comments | Posted in Christie O. | by lisa

I am NOT a runner.

I don’t have the right shoes.  I have too much weight hanging around to be pounding my joints.  Running makes me huff and puff.  Let’s not forget HOW MUCH IT HURTS ME TO RUN.

So yeah, I am NOT a runner.

This is so funny to me now because back in the day, like WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY BACK (think junior high school, which for me would have been 1984-1986 if my memory serves me correctly), I was on the track team…..for LONG DISTANCE running.  I was also on a relay team……for LONG DISTANCE running.  I loved running back then.   We competed often and I actually racked up a few wins.  Yes, there were other runners competing against me.

Of course, back then, I was maybe 100-110 lbs, a size 5 or 7 in juniors, and I wore pink and purple striped leg warmers (not while I was running, ha ha).  I had a Dorothy Hamill haircut, my family didn’t have much money, and I used running as my escape from all that pre-teen angst.

Why am I talking about running so much, especially since I am NOT a runner?

Because folks, after the EA 30 Day Challenge is over, I am going to start the NEW EA Sports Active 5K Challenge.  EA has developed a training program with the help of Bob Green (Oprah’s personal trainer) and Gerard Recio (EA’s Fitness Expert).  The goal is to keep us moving and exercising after the 30 Day Challenge ends.  A NEW goal.

I have decided to GO FOR IT and will actually attempt to RUN the whole darn thing.

EA Sports Active has also identified Community Leaders across the US to help pull people together- to train together, to run together, to complete the 5K together, to support one another.  Guess who is a Community Leader?

Yep, I got sucked in.  So did April, Christy, Christie, Heather, and Melissa.

We have all committed to starting the EA Sports Active 5K Challenge TRAINING on Monday, Oct 5th.

Training will last 4-5 weeks, combining actual RUNNING/JOGGING/WALKING workouts with EA Sports Active workouts.

Who wants to join us?

We will be doing a Virtual Sisterhood 5K on Saturday, November 7th or Sunday, November 8th (details are still being worked out).

Virtual?  What do I mean by that?  I mean, that on November 7th or November 8th, all of us Shrinking Jeans Sisters (and brothers) will be walking/jogging/running a 5K (that’s 3.1 miles) in our respective areas.

So again, I ask you, who wants to join us?!!!!!!!

Leave a comment on this post but also go to the EA Sports Active site to register officially.

An alternative for those of you wanting to participate in the training for the 5K (but don’t own a Wii not Sports Active), the Couch 25K is an excellent program that focuses solely hitting the pavement.  I know several ladies in this group have completed this program or are currently working their way through it.  The training program is a tad longer but the goal is the same: to get you moving and exercising and running a 5K.

you ladies know i love a good 5K. my 1st wedding annivesary is on the 8th of november...and my hubby is taking me to california to celebrate. i'm sorry i'm gonna have to pass on this one. :(
  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans
Just a thought.....you could do the run prior to leaving for your trip!

Where are you going in California?
  • BrookeF
he's talking about seeing the redwoods or the sequoias. since this is his
idea i'm letting go of my control freak tendencies and letting him do all
    the planning. :)
  • I am doing the c25k and I should be about ready to do my 5k by then, so - count me in for November!!
  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans
Awesome! We'll have more details in the near future about how to "capture" all of us running sisters on that day. I am thinking we might need to take pics and post.....
  • That would be great but we need to take pics BEFORE the run - please, please - not after!!
  • Definitely pics and post.
  • TheaDramaMama
I registered last night! And I am in for that virtual race, even if I have to run it on my treadmill.

You didn't expect me to run in the cold, did you?
  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans
WHAT?! You have to run outside, in the cold : ). I'm glad you are going to join us. This should definitely be interesting.
  • TheaDramaMama
If it's 65 or below, I'm on the treadmill.
  • Sweet! I signed up. I did all the training for the couch25k but couldn't afford to run a marathon then.. I'd love to do this... yay!
  • Kelly
    Sooo in. :)
  • Of course I'm in!!! I can't wait to work with EAS to map out my 5K route!!!!! WOOT!!!
  • I'm in ladies. I registered last night. There is a 5k here on November 7th that I usually walk, but I'll be running it this year. Thanks for continuing to be such an inspiration to me. I never would have guessed that I would ever be training to run anything.
  • I just realized that the title of this post is almost the name of the 5k I'll be doing. I'm running the Run Baby Baby Run. It's a fundraiser for a NICU unit at a local hospital where my niece works. The people who sponsor the race had twins in the NICU, hence the baby baby part of the title. Maybe this is a good omen!!
  • I LOVE THIS!!! i am part of a mom's group who is trying to find ways to raise money for our continued projects helping families of the NICU, I bet we could do something like this!!! (my son was a preemie.) How awesome would that be!!! So happy for you running a 5k and double happy that you're helping families in the NICU!!! DOUBLE WOOT!
  • Lisa_ShrinkingJeans
    Very cool, Nancy!
  • bwJen
I love challenges but I am not a runner and I do not own a wii or EActive...but I will complete a 5k with the rest of the sisterhood.
  • Ok so I am in for the EA Sports Active 5K Challenge... nothing like signing up late. I've signed up to walk/jog 10K race on 11/08/09 in my area. I am hoping I can put in a decent time especially the first half. I am sure I will be mostly walking but still should be fun!
  • Yay!!! I'm so glad you're joining us! If you sign up through the EA SPORTS link in the post, they'll send you a shirt!!! Get to it, girl!!
  • Thanks Christy! I signed up through the EA Sports link.
