About Lissa: Melissa is the Co-Founder of Shrinking Kitchen and the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans She has been married for a dozen years and is mother to four children (15,12, 8 and 8), with more soon coming her way through the foster care system. Melissa has a love/hate relationship with food (okay, mostly candy) and cooking. This isn't improved by the fact that her husband, the true family chef, works in another city half the year, leaving Melissa to figure out how to feed her growing family something other than Pop-Tarts. Melissa loves her camera, enjoys traveling, kickboxing, creating beautiful things she finds on Pinterest, and planning her dream home that will be built… someday. melissa@shrinkingjeans.net :: @lissajoy :: whereverimaywander.com :: pinning here View author profile.

One way I like to give back or pay it forward during the holiday season is to pick gifts from the angel trees. This year we are giving gifts to a 69 yr old man in a nursing home who is alone. There were 5 items on Roy's wish list and we were told it wasn't necessary to get all 5 but we did. I hope he will be smiling this Christmas morning.

For our Christmas party this year I am going to be giving a donation to the charity of their choice in their name. So far I have gotten the name of a local animal shelter and a group who provides families in Africa with a clean water sand filtration system (yeah, I'm totally spacing on the name of the organization).

We got a gift for my daughter to take to a nursing home resident. A nurse at my clinic got a 12 year old foster child yesterday and is in need of clothes, so I looked through my daughter's old stuff and couldn't find the right sizes. i think I buy her a few things this weekend. Cheese is one of my fav foods, I better win

We always do the Angel Tree or Be Santa to a Senior. I give away tons of goodie baskets to all hubby's co-workers. I am also crocheting some scarfs that I am thinking about taking down to a shelter downtown at the beginning of the New Year, when its coldest here.

  • Nancy

I always take names from the angel trees and I donate to a pregnancy assistance program that we do with the preschool kids.

We help the kids with the food drive at their school, and are always cleaning toys out to donate because our kids are lucky enough to get new ones (way too often). I'd like to give more, but need to find a good way!

I made up a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child with my 2yo this year. Talk about the agonies of shopping with a 2yo – and then prying the stuff out of her hand to pack it, and then trying to keep her out of the box until we could drop it off. All fun!

My son and I did a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child this year, too. It's so hard to pack a gift for a special child into a shoebox! I wish I could have sent a refrigerator box :)
