The Thursday Three

January 28th, 2010 | Comments | Posted in Christy, Featured, Motivation, Thursday Three | by christy

Yesterday was weigh in day, and we couldn’t help but notice that some of you are really struggling. Struggling with gains, with maintaining, with small losses. Well, this Thursday Three is going to be a gentle reminder, that it’s not always going to turn out exactly the way you want it to.

Losing weight is not easy, and I’m going to share 3 thoughts with you to help you understand what we’re trying to teach you here at the Sisterhood.

Thought #1: Everyones’ weight-loss, just like everyones’ fingerprint, is unique. Please don’t compare yourself to others when it comes to this journey, because what works for one person, might not work for you. Whether it’s Weight Watchers, counting calories, or simply journaling your food, there is something that will work for, you just have to discover it!

Check out some of these free sites for tracking your food:

Spark People

The Daily Plate

Remember, what works for one person, may not work for you. You have to figure out what works for you, and that may take some time.

Thought #2: Rethink Your Shrink. Yes, that’s the name of our Challenge, but have you been playing along? This challenge is about rethinking what did and didn’t work for you in the past. We are examining ourselves from the inside out, and getting our heads, hearts, and bodies in the game!

Put on your thinking caps and get to work on some of the amazing assignments you’ve been given, or if you’ve already done them, go back and review them. Daily. Open your mind and your heart and really think about your words and your thoughts. Dig deep.

And go read April’s post, because it’s spot on.

Thought #3: For Pete’s sake, stop being so down on yourselves! You cannot FAIL on this journey. Yes, you may stumble, but that is part of this journey, and you can’t learn if you don’t mess up. And when you have a bad day or week or month, own it and move one. There’s nothing you can do to change what’s happened in the past, you can only focus on what you’re going to do from this moment on and move forward. One day at time, one small goal at a time, one victory at a time.

If you pay attention, there are so many small victories along the journey, and if you take the time stop and celebrate each small victory, the trip will be so much sweeter.

In closing, we want you to know that the Sisterhood is here for you. We love you if you lose, we love you if you gain, and we love you if you stay the same. Our support for you is undying, and our hope for you is success. And if you need a swift kick in the ass, just let us know where you live, and we’ll arrange for one of us to be there do it as soon as possible.

Very well put - I loved the part about not failing - It is so true... We are so hard on ourselves and really life is much more about how we respond to the ups and downs than the fact that they happen.
  • So fucking true!!! We are all different and we CANNOT compare ourselves to anyone else! I am loving all the rethinking part of this challenge (this is the first challenge I am really really participating in and it is definitely because of the rethinking aspect ~~ well, that and all you snarky hookers)!!

And why are us chicks so damn hard on ourselves?!?! We need to lighten up!!

    Thanks for an awesome challenge!

    much love, J

First, I apologize for being a whiney ass little bitch yesterday. Next, thank you all for listening and all your kind comments. Lastly, I am much better today and this post is totally being taken to heart. I'm feeling much better and I've been on the treadmill and the wii today. Food is good and water intake is also good. Thank you all so much. You mean the world to me. Christy, I must confess that I was thinking of saying a needed a real in person ass whoopin from you, just so we could finally meet. Someday!!
  • DO NOT APOLOGIZE, Nancy. You are more than welcome to whine and bitch and moan around here. Just don't do it every week, okay? :P

We love you. You rock and you CAN do this!!!!!

I would love to come kick your ass, I mean MEET you in person!!!!
  • So glad you've posted this, it was perfect timing! And a great post, Christy!!! The halfway mark is when everyone (me) tends to get frustrated and want to quit because results just don't seem to come fast enough, but there's no quitting here!! We're all in this together!! Stay the course, ladies, we're going to do this!!

Wonderful, timely post! This challenge, I really have been *re-thinking my shrink*! Evaluating, on the fly what's working, what's not, and the why's of it all. Acknowledging the *why* has been paramount. And I have to say, about half the time it hasn't been a terribly comfortable experience! But I'm learning and growing (and shrinking!) from it all, and I feel like I'm finally figuring it out.

    Thanks, SJ!
  • Growing and shrinking. That makes my heart sing, Karena!!!!

I love this. And I needed this. I didn't weigh in yesterday because after showing a ginormous loss last week, was right back to where I started again yesterday. I must've been perilously balancing the week before or something. Everything I do seems to keep me staying at the same weight. Even with a shift of mentality from losing weight to losing inches, I'm failing there as well. This post gets me thinking and hopefully we're heading in the right direction now, but it's a journey and I'm choosing to be on it. Thanks!
  • Choosing to be on the journey is the most important thing! I'm so glad this post was what you needed today.
  • Yes Yes YES! Good reminder. We all have our down days, but I think the key is to recognize them, kick them to the curb, and focus on where we're going. How we're going to get there. What works FOR us (individually). This is definitely a personal journey, but also a journey we can share. Lean on us! We're pretty damn strong. For reals. April can totally kick your ass. So can I. So can any of us. If you need a gentle pat or a full on throttling (loving, of coure;), we're here for ALL of you.

    The end.
  • I'm just going to say one thing. Amen!
  • Thanks, babe :)

i wanted to cry (story of my life) this morning when i lady i work with told me if i got any lighter i'd blow away.

she's been swimming a while now (maybe almost a year?) and has already lost an incredible amount of weight. we pass each other in the hall as she's leaving the pool and i'm going to hop on a the treadmill or do a weights session.

we had different starting points and her journey is different than mine. i just hope she realizes that.

after her comment, i tried to make it clear that my exercise is more about bettering myself (or beating my race time) than weight loss. she didn't say it, but i have other people who have "if you that small and want to lose weight, what must you think about me?"

and that comment hurts, because I've thought it about my skinny friends before too. but its really not how it works. just like we could all think of reasons other people rocked before we could fill out our own list, conversely, we find our faults easier than we find other peoples.

now that i've hijacked this post...i'll shut up.

after i say this. help if you can. if you have no words of wisdom - hugs are pretty freakin nice too.

i love you ladies! thanks for being a huge part of my journey!!!

  • Brooke, this is starting to happen to me. Trust me, I still have at least 15 pounds to go before I'm done, but I HATE the comments. "oh, you'd better not lose anymore.....are you done yet?......you're a mom, you don't need to worry about being thin like a single gal....." GAG. SHUT UP, already.

Do what you need to do for YOU and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Unless you get freakishly small and frail, then I'll come to TN and kick your butt.

Great post. I also love being in the sisterhood. I totally didn't want to workout this morning. It is like 15 below with the wind chill this morning, so I really wanted to curl up on the couch with a blanket but I knew I needed to workout and needed to do it anyways. A lot of my motivation is because of the sisterhood and having the accountability and not wanting to let myself down. I'll let you know if I need my butt kicked but right now I am okay. Thanks
  • Way to go on getting up and working out! YOU ROCK!!!

I'm so glad you love it here! We're glad you're a Sister :)

I love being in the sisterhood! After a year and meeting Christy M. in real life I was convinced to join. And I am so happy that I did. I think this post is a great reminder for all of us that regardless of what happens with our weight we support each other. There will be good times and bad and we just need to remember this is a marathon not a sprint.
  • We love you, too, Renee!! When you got here, you jumped right in and started supporting everyone, and that's what it's all about here! Wish I could give you a big hug right now!!!

Thanks for those thoughts! Nearly the kick in the butt I needed to keep going (but now that I've lost some of the weight, I can literally kick my own butt when needed, and it got a good hard kick yesterday).

Couldn't do it without all of you - the support is amazing, the accountability is awesome, and the butt kicking is necessary! Thank you Thank you Thank you!
  • Glad we could provide good kicks in the butt for you! I also have to kick my own butt daily, sometimes hard :)
